Full Job Description
Role: Head of Human Resources

Location: San Diego, CA (in-office)

Salary Range: $150,000 - $180,000 / yr + stock options, 401k matching, and other benefits

Role Overview:

Seasats designs and deploys unmanned surface vessels that operate at sea for months at a time. We're growing quickly, with more than 100 employees across engineering, manufacturing, and operations. As we scale, we're looking for a Head of Human Resources to make sure our organization is as exceptional as our technology.

We're looking for someone who's built and led an HR function before and knows what it takes to help a growing company scale successfully. You'll design and implement the systems, policies, and practices that let us continue growing without losing the culture, camaraderie, and high standards that have made Seasats who we are today. Our CEO will provide context and partnership on the biggest decisions, but you'll own the function and the roadmap from there.

Role Details:

You will:
  • Build and continuously improve the HR function: policies, programs, and practices suited to a fast-moving company (probably not a Fortune 500 playbook)
  • Evaluate our existing HR systems (we currently use Gusto) and recommend and implement changes as we scale
  • Evaluate and refine our compensation philosophy, salary structure, benefits program, and related vendor relationships
  • Partner with the CEO and leadership on org design, workforce planning, and personnel growth plans
  • Coach managers, including many leading a team for the first time, through hiring, performance, team feedback, and sub-team culture building
  • Own employee relations and other sensitive matters with sound judgment
  • Strengthen how we recruit, partnering with hiring managers to identify and attract the best talent while improving candidate experiences
  • Flag organizational risks before they become fires, and bring solutions, not just problems, to leadership
  • Help ensure Seasats remains a place where exceptional people can do the best work of their careers

About You:
  • 10+ years in HR/People leadership, including experience as the senior-most HR leader at a company of 100+ employees
  • Experience partnering directly with founders or CEOs on company-wide organizational decisions
  • Experience coaching and developing new managers
  • Built or significantly evolved an HR function at a high-growth startup, including systems, comp structures, and onboarding. This isn't your first rodeo
  • Experience evaluating and improving existing HR systems and processes, not just building from a blank slate
  • A track record of earning trust and buy-in from executives and managers without needing constant oversight
  • Comfort holding both ends of the job: strategic enough to shape org design, hands-on enough to handle the messy stuff yourself
  • Excellent judgment. You'll regularly be asked to navigate situations where there isn't an obvious right answer

Due to export control requirements applicable to this position, we are only able to consider U.S. persons, as defined by U.S. export control laws. This includes U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents, and individuals granted asylee or refugee status.

Bonus points if you have:
  • A strong knowledge of California employment law and experience managing compliance across multiple states

Along with your salary, you'll receive perks including:
  • Stock options
  • Competitive insurance (including a 99% employer-covered Gold HMO plan or other options)
  • 401k matching up to 4% of salary
  • Four free lunches per week
  • An employee activity fund
  • A pet-friendly office
  • Unlimited/Flex PTO

Hiring Notes:

When applying, you'll be asked to provide a resume and answer a few screening questions.

Please note that we are currently unable to sponsor employment visas, so candidates must be independently authorized to work in the United States.

We look forward to reviewing your application!
