The
Group Underwriter Consultant Senior is responsible for determining acceptability of insurance risks and appropriate premium rates for large and complex group cases. Position is the most senior technical underwriting expert.
How You Will Make an Impact:- Develops and evaluates pricing and renewal strategies based on experience, demographics, plan design, market conditions, and other risk factors.
- Monitors underwriting workflow, business results, internal controls, and adherence to established policies, procedures, and guidelines.
- Evaluates and provides guidance on underwriting exceptions, balancing risk, competitive considerations, and business objectives.
- Collaborates with Sales, Account Management, Actuarial, Finance, and other matrix partners on pricing, sales, and renewal strategies.
- Serves as a subject matter expert on underwriting methodologies, rating practices, risk assessment, and business processes.
- Manages a portfolio of large and complex clients, providing underwriting analysis, recommendations, and ongoing consultation.
- Participates in cross-functional initiatives and identifies opportunities to improve underwriting processes, controls, tools, and operational effectiveness.
- Provides technical guidance and mentoring to underwriting associates.
- Calculates renewal rates for large complex cases based on thorough analysis of experience, location, demographics, etc.
- Determines and provides guidance to medical underwriters concerning the risk selection of applicants applying for individual health coverage.
- Coordinates with other departments to ensure accuracy and consistency of overall account reporting.
- Proposes rates for prospective business utilizing a combination of other carrier experience, demographic data and manual rates.
- Performs post-sale reviews.
- Prepares or supervises preparation of annual settlements, ERISA reports, rate projections, or benefit change increments and decrements. Surveys existing product portfolios by market, monitors sales results, trends and needs, recommends product portfolio changes.
- Assists in establishing rating and administrative procedures.
- Participates in major multi-functional teams as underwriting representative.
- Assists in the technical development of underwriting associates, which may include monitoring reports and workflow to provide recommendations on productivity and efficiency improvements.
- Updates and monitors departmental processes and procedures in compliance with system, regulatory and business requirements.
Minimum Requirements:Requires a BA/BS in a related field; Minimum 7 years of related experience; or any combination of education and experience, which would provide an equivalent background.
Preferred Skills, Capabilities, and Experiences:- CPCU, CLU, LOMA, HIAA, PAHM or other insurance related courses preferred.
- Student health population experience and/or professional employer organizations (PEO) experience preferred.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel experience, including working with complex formulas and macros, is desired but not required.
