Grossing Supervisor - Irving, TX, Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM

Pay range: $76,400+ per year

Salary offers are based on a wide range of factors including relevant skills, training, experience, education, and, where applicable, certifications obtained. Market and organizational factors are also considered. Successful candidates may be eligible to receive annual performance bonus compensation.

Responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Surgical Pathology area and supervision of the grossing and support staff. In conjunction with the Department Manager, ensures that all departmental policies and procedures meet the standards of current state and federal regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and supervise the Lab Assistants in the Surgical Pathology area, Grossing Personnel and other Surgical Pathology support staff
  • Schedule and maintain adequate coverage and effective utilization of personnel.
  • Maintain attendance records; approve overtime and vacation time.
  • Perform grossing department specific orientation and training verification.
  • Perform New Hire QC for grossing staff when applicable.
  • Provide technical instructions and training of personnel in techniques, instrumentation, and organization of work.
  • Administer competency assessment, including direct observation, to grossing staff.
  • Administer and maintain HPAP documentation when applicable.
  • Assist in the preparation of the budget and recommend capital equipment needs. Monitor and control expenses in line with department budget.
  • Interact directly with pathologists regarding gross dissection/description activities, including defined specimen types that require direct supervision by a pathologist.
  • Identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either correct the problems or immediately notify the histology supervisor/manager, technical supervisor, or laboratory director.
  • Maintain appropriate levels of supplies and reagents commensurate with workload.
  • Maintain a current procedure manual, revising as needed including appropriate documentation of review and approval.
  • Interview and select potential employees in conjunction with the Manager.
  • Write and conduct employee performance evaluations.
  • Ensure that all employees follow all company and department policies; initiate performance improvement with employees, as needed.
  • Participate in company meetings and conduct departmental meetings, when applicable.
  • Communicate with the Histopathology Technical Supervisor and Senior Medical Director/Laboratory Director as appropriate
  • Maintain equipment and instruments in good operating condition, recognize any
  • malfunctions and troubleshoot as needed.
  • Ensure acceptable technical quality, so that the Pathologists can adequately evaluate
  • prepared slides.
  • Maintain appropriate Quality Assurance documentation.
  • Ensure that all employees comply with all safety regulations, including use of
  • personal protective equipment.
  • Ensure that all grossing staff have completed initial formalin monitoring when
  • initially hired and periodically thereafter, if applicable.
  • Complete successfully all personnel departmental training and competency
  • assessments.
  • Interact with medical transcription staff, as applicable
  • Facilitate and develop department-specific continuing education
  • Perform special projects, as assigned by the department manager.
  • Provide backup for grossing personnel.
  • Ensure all corporate safety, quality control and quality assurance standards are met.

Required Work Experience:
  • 3-6 years surgical gross experience. Experience should include grossing complex specimens if laboratory's daily workload will consist of such specimens.
  • Meets all requirements as outlined in corporate Minimum Qualifications for Personnel Performing Tissue Gross Examinations SOP and 1988 CLIA CFR 493.1489.

Preferred Work Experience:

1-2 years in a leadership role preferred.

Physical and Mental Requirements:

Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time

Knowledge:

Education
  • Bachelor's Degree BS degree in Biological/Physical sciences or equivalent combination of education and experience (Preferred)

Licenses and Certifications
  • AAPA Fellowship status and/or PA (ASCP) (Preferred)
  • Meets all requirements as outlined in corporate Minimum Qualifications for Non-Pathologist Performing Gross Tissue Examinations SOP and 1988 CLIA CFR 493.1489. (Required)
  • NAACLS approved Pathologist Assistant training program (Required)
