Geophysicist
Location: Sherbrooke / Boston / Montréal / Ottawa
Employment Type: Full-Time in a fast-growing startup
Key Responsibilities
- Magnetic field mapping & survey design - Plan and execute surveys to produce total-field, vector, and gradient magnetic maps for navigation applications, selecting appropriate sensor configurations, flight/traverse parameters, and tie-line strategies to meet required spatial resolution and coverage.
- Data processing & geophysical software - Process raw magnetic data through established workflows in Geosoft Oasis Montaj and equivalent geophysical toolchains, including diurnal correction, IGRF removal, levelling, microlevelling, gridding, and filtering
- Research-level modelling with SimPEG & Python - Apply open-source inversion and forward-modelling frameworks (SimPEG, discretize) alongside custom Python pipelines for advanced susceptibility modelling, potential field transforms, and algorithm development. Leverage these tools to simulate and compare different types of magnetic maps.
- Data QA - Continuously monitor and evaluate data quality throughout acquisition and processing; identifying noise sources, sensor anomalies, heading errors, and tie-line mismatches. Maintain rigorous QA/QC documentation to ensure map integrity for navigation use.
- Field trial coordination & adaptive survey management - Coordinate and lead field campaigns; liaising with platform operators, logistics teams, and navigation engineers; while interpreting data in real time and making informed decisions to adjust survey plans dynamically in response to coverage gaps or environmental conditions.
- Gridding, interpolation & map product delivery - Apply and evaluate gridding algorithms (minimum curvature, kriging, bi-directional) and potential field enhancements (RTP, upward continuation, derivatives) to produce calibrated, georeferenced map products formatted for direct ingestion into navigation systems.
- Cross-disciplinary collaboration & critical interpretation - Work closely with INS/navigation engineers to translate geophysical map outputs into fit-for-purpose navigation datasets, critically interpreting ambiguous magnetic signatures, flagging geological noise sources, and iterating on map specifications as system requirements evolve.
