Primary Duties
The Geographic Information Systems (G.I.S.) Coordinator will be responsible for day-to-day coordination, triage and delegation of the work related to collecting, updating and maintaining the geographic datasets for fibre, water, wastewater, hot water tanks, electric, and gas networks. The G.I.S. coordinator will actively manage stewardship of and standardize spatial data in the G.I.S. database, oversee geospatial infrastructure and provide a key role in bridging the gap between management, end-users and the G.I.S. Technicians.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Serve as the corporate G.I.S. subject matter expert responsible for maintaining accurate and up-to-date records of utility assets within the G.I.S. database, ensuring datasets are regularly updated and supporting utilities across the organization.
2. Research, analyze, and report on emerging issues, new techniques, technologies, methodologies, and G.I.S. solutions.
3. Develop G.I.S. solutions, including applications, web maps, and user experiences.
4. Support Computer Aided Design (CAD) based hydraulic modeling requests.
5. Provide ongoing training and mentorship to technicians and G.I.S. users.
6. Lead capital improvement projects (e.g., Utility Network Migration, Fibre Manager, etc.).
7. Coordinate daily task assignments and planning for technicians.
8. Perform geodatabase quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC).
9. Communicate with internal departments to share important updates and notices.
10. Collaborate and engage with external organizations to support G.I.S. operations and ongoing maintenance.
11. Troubleshoot issues related to G.I.S. mapping interfaces.
12. Design and develop data sets, webhooks and reporting tools to support asset management.
13. Perform database Q.A/Q.C, including managing and validating field edits.
14. Provide administrative, training, troubleshooting and system configuration support for new Cityworks users.
15. Receive and fulfill requests for cartographic products to support visual needs (e.g., planning locates).
16. Develop and maintain G.I.S. databases and scripts, and update procedural manuals and guidelines with a focus on continuous improvement and innovation.
17. Develop and maintain reporting tools for use with ArcGIS and Cityworks.
18. Support multi-jurisdictional stakeholders and municipal divisions in achieving strategic objectives.
Education, Certification and Other Qualifications Required
• Post-secondary diploma in Geographic Information Systems or related field
• 3-5 years' experience working with ESRI software in a municipal or private sector environment
• Class G drivers' licence
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
• Expert knowledge of G.I.S. systems including ESRI ArcGIS Enterprise, ArcMap, ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online and related software.
• Advanced understanding of remote sensing, cartographic standards, principles, and techniques.
• Advanced ability to coach others and lead within a team.
• Advanced written and verbal communication skills with an ability to present data and insights using various formats.
• Advanced knowledge of spatial data management and relational databases (Oracle, MS-SQL).
• Advanced skills at task prioritization, organization, and multitasking.
• Intermediate experience with utility design.
• Intermediate knowledge of Autodesk systems including AutoCAD Map and AutoCAD Civil 3D.
• Intermediate experience operating Global Positioning System (G.P.S.) Receivers, Robotic Total Station and other survey grade data collection equipment.
• Basic knowledge of modern programming languages/tools, including Python, VB and Arcade.
• Basic knowledge of CityWorks or similar G.I.S. based enterprise asset management platforms.
