Role Overview
We are building a new, highly secure, fault-tolerant application in Microsoft Azure to support high-volume data ingestion, ledger-based recordkeeping, and analytics reporting for a small, controlled user base (
This system will orchestrate reliable, persistent API-driven workflows between internal clients and external partner organizations, ensuring zero data loss, strong consistency, and regulatory-grade security.
While this is a full-stack role (Java / Angular), the backend is the priority. The ideal candidate is comfortable owning distributed systems design, resiliency patterns, and cloud-native architecture, while still being capable of contributing to the Angular front end when needed.
Important: The project has aggressive and sometimes unreasonable timeline expectations.
We are specifically looking for engineers who are comfortable operating in that reality and using AI-assisted development tools to accelerate delivery.
Key Responsibilities
Backend & Systems Engineering (Primary)
Design and build Java / Spring Boot microservices deployed to Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS)
Implement high-volume, fault-tolerant data processing pipelines with strong delivery guarantees
Ensure persistent, reliable input delivery so clients never need to resend data
Build and maintain ledger-style recordkeeping services handling confidential datasets
Orchestrate API-based service calls between internal systems and partner organizations
Design for multi-region Azure deployments with:
= 10-minute RPO (targeting near-zero)
= 1-hour RTO
Implement caching and buffering strategies:
Initial: Azure Blob Storage
Roadmap: Kafka (event streaming) and Redis (in-memory caching)
Front End (Secondary)
Contribute to an Angular front end used by a small number of internal users
Support analytics and reporting views
Collaborate with backend services for secure data access
Cloud, Reliability & Security
Design for geo-distributed resiliency, queuing, and persistence
Apply Azure-native services for storage, caching, and messaging
Build systems aligned with U.S. Government security standards, including:
Familiarity with NIST 800-53
Understanding of Moderate / High security control environments
Support production deployments and operational readiness
AI-Augmented Development (Required)
Actively use or have experience with AI-assisted / agentic coding tools
Current environment is standardized on Windsurf, using Claude Sonnet 4-5
Experience may be:
Professional or personal
Coding agents, copilots, or AI-driven refactoring / testing tools
Candidates must be able to articulate how AI meaningfully improves their engineering workflow
Required Qualifications
Strong experience with Java and Spring Boot
Experience building and operating cloud-native applications in Azure
Hands-on experience with AKS / Kubernetes
Experience with distributed systems, fault tolerance, and high-volume data processing
Knowledge of persistent messaging, queuing, and caching patterns
Familiarity with Angular (full-stack capability strongly preferred)
Experience working with confidential or regulated data
Demonstrated use of AI tools in software development
Preferred / Nice-to-Have
Kafka, Redis, or other event-streaming platforms
Oracle databases (small footprint)
Multi-region Azure architecture
Analytics/reporting system experience
Prior work in government, regulated, or high-security environments
Experience working under tight timelines with evolving requirements
