Position Overview

The Focused Shop Manager is responsible for managing the day-to-day activities of a Focus Shop, ensuring excellence in safety, quality, cost, and schedule performance. This role leads all aspects of project execution, working closely with planning, manufacturing engineering, labour relations, and skilled trades to drive continuous improvement and achieve key operational objectives.

Location: On-site Cambridge, ON, Canada

Your Day-to-Day as a Focused Shop Manager
  • Lead and oversee Shop Supervisors and unionized skilled trades while ensuring adherence to all BWXT policies and standards.
  • Achieve and maintain on-time delivery by monitoring production plans, schedules, priorities, and manpower requirements.
  • Recommend and coordinate use of alternate work centers, parallel manufacturing opportunities, workforce sharing, and sublet decisions.
  • Review production methods and costs, making continuous improvement recommendations and maintaining favourable cost-center budgets.
  • Participate in quarterly budget reviews and achieve annual revenue commitments.
  • Address non-conformance issues by collaborating with Project Managers and Quality teams to ensure corrective actions are implemented.
  • Support safety performance through regular safety meetings, incident investigations, enforcement of safety policies, and maintenance of clean, organized workspaces.
  • Ensure Supervisors complete all required safety training, behaviour-based observations, and documentation within required timelines.
  • Administer the collective agreement, maintaining strong working relationships with the workforce and union executives while addressing labour relations matters in collaboration with HR.
  • Conduct annual performance reviews, manage staffing levels, and make decisions to align with budget and workload needs.
  • Perform additional duties as required to support organizational goals.


Required Qualifications
  • College Diploma in a related field or equivalent trades certificate.
  • 10 years of experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • 5 years of experience in shop processes (welding, fabrication, etc.).
  • Understanding of enterprise and accounting systems.
  • Knowledge of production, planning, scheduling techniques, collective agreements, OSHA rules, workload allocation, and competitive landscape.
  • Working knowledge of the Employment Standards Act.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.
  • Significant leadership experience, preferably in a unionized manufacturing environment.
  • Experience managing complex unionized manufacturing operations or heavy industrial production environments (Desired).

The base salary range for this position in Ontario (CA-ON) at the start of employment is expected to be between $108,000 and $158,000 per year. However, the base salary offered is based on local job market factors and may vary further depending on factors specific to the selected job candidate, such as job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and other objective business considerations. Subject to these considerations, the total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, such as an annual cash incentive in addition to a full range of medical, retirement, and/or other benefits.
