Fire Sprinkler Design Assistant Manager - Senior Level
Corona, CA
The LA / Orange County District office of Cosco Fire Protection has a challenging leadership and growth-oriented opportunity for the right individual. Job Description:
The fire sprinkler design assistant manager directs and coordinates activities of a team of engineers and designers to design fire sprinkler systems by performing the following duties outlined below personally or through subordinate personnel. Further, the incumbent has responsibility to supervise, motivate, guide and direct the design staff and to provide the proper working relationship between the design department and all other departments. The role requires decisions of high complexity, and the review of questions from entry/mid-level designers. The role requires judgment to refer questions/problems to other team leaders and management where appropriate. A successful team member in this role will demonstrate an exceptional understanding of design/drafting techniques, fire sprinkler installation and fabrication techniques, a strong mechanical aptitude and construction background, and ability to complete mathematical calculations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:
  • Direct team activities and prioritizes/coordinates schedules to design new fire sprinkler/suppression systems.
  • Provide technical oversight and review of sprinkler drawings, calculations, fabrication lists, and other pertinent deliverables.
  • Develop process improvements that imrpove efficiency, consistency, and quality of the ultimate product.
  • Support Designers in the coordination with the MEP teams and General Contractors for BIM (Building Information Modeling), utilizing current programs (e.g. REVIT, NAVIS, etc.)
  • Resolves problems using solutions that involve new techniques, technologies, & concepts.
  • Confers with management, production, and installation staff to determine engineering feasibility, cost effectiveness, and customer demand for new and existing systems.
  • Provides guidance and support on code interpretation as well as first level plan review.
  • Provide training and coaching for the development of individual designers.
  • Recruiting and staffing to meet design needs for the growth of the business.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of new technologies which may improve operations, and develops recommendations accordingly.


Key Skills and Capabilities:
  • Ability to read and intrepret construction documents (drawings, specifications, ASIs, etc.).
  • Strong analytical and mathematical aptitude .
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office (especially Word and Excel), AutoCAD, and Fire Sprinkler Design software (e.g. AutoSprink, HydraCAD etc.) AutoSprink experience preferred.
  • Working knowlegde of hydraulic calculations, stocklisting, project design, and project management. Abilty to review and approve work product of other design team members.
  • Practical experience designing Wet, Dry, Deluge, and Pre Action Sprinkler Systems for installation. Design experience with fire pumps and standpipes is required.
  • Special Hazards design experience (e.g. fixed water spray, clean agent, foam, etc.) a plus.
  • Strong familiarity with general construction practices and terms.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Comfortable negotiating with customers, vendors, etc.
  • Organized, detail oriented, self starter able to operate in a team enviroment.
  • Working knowledge of NFPA 13, 13D, 13R, 14, 20, 25 and associated Codes/Standards.

Minimum Qualifications :
  • High school diploma or equivalent, postsecondary education preferred.
  • 7 Years (10+ years preferred) years experience in Fire Protection Design & PM
  • Previous fire sprinkler designer supervision experience a plus.
  • Experience with Revit, NavisWorks, and AutoSprink a plus.
  • NICET III (min), NICET IV or PE (preferred).

Supervisory Responsibilities: This role formal supervisory responsibility. Ability to lead entry/mid-level designers on multiple projects and review/approve their work product.
Preferred license or certification: NICET III (Min), NICET IV or Fire Protection PE (preferred)
Education: Bachelor's degree (B.S.) from four-year college or university; or eight to ten years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
