Full Job Description
The City of Lenexa, Kansas Fire Department is currently accepting applications for a Fire Lieutenant or Fire Captain to work out of our Fire Prevention division, dependent upon qualifications.

Hours: Monday - Friday from 8:00 am - 5:00 pm

Location: Lenexa Fire Station #3: 24000 Prairie Star Parkway, Lenexa, KS 66227

Position Summary

This position leads, manages, plans and coordinates the fire prevention, life safety and fire investigation activities within the Fire Prevention Division. Coordinates activities with other divisions, departments, outside agencies and the general public providing complex and responsible staff assistance. This position is designated as essential, requiring the member to report to work in a variety of situations, including emergency callbacks.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Performs building site plan and fire protection systems reviews for construction projects and conducts meetings with contractors, architects and owners regarding construction projects and activities.
  • Performs fire code interpretation, written fire code requirements and enforcement guidelines. Prepares and issues formal complaints in Municipal Court for failure to comply with established fire codes.
  • Supervises, manages and coordinates programs and individuals participating in fire and life safety inspections according to international building and fire codes and NFPA standards; applicable federal laws, state statutes, regulations, departmental and City ordinances.
  • Prepares, develops and participates in fire prevention, life safety programs and other public fire education activities by speaking to businesses, schools, clubs and a variety of citizen groups in order to promote public preparedness.
  • Supervises, manages and coordinates the fire investigation program that is directed toward origin and cause determination of fires, explosions and other emergencies that endanger life or property. Recommends required training and credentialing of fire investigators to accomplish fire investigation program goals and objectives.
  • Prepares and develops public education programs, targeting specific community risks and risk audiences as identified through incident, demographic and program data analysis. Provides training and instructs personnel in fire prevention/life safety services, emergency services, standard practice guidelines, reports, records and equipment.
  • Drives City and/or personal vehicle to perform essential functions of position.

Minimum Qualifications:

Fire Lieutenant: Three years of experience in career fire service agency as a uniformed firefighter with Fire Fighter I & II and Kansas EMT certifications; NFPA 1031 Fire Inspector I certification; NFPA 1041 Fire Instructor I certification within one year of appointment. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.

Fire Captain: Five years of experience in career fire service agency as a uniformed firefighter with Fire Fighter I & II and Kansas EMT certifications, with at least one year in a company officer role; Associate degree in fire, emergency medical science or related field; NFPA 1021 Fire Officer I certification; NFPA 1031 Fire Inspector I certification and NFPA 1041 Fire Instructor I certification. Completion of NFPA 1031 Plans Examiner certification and NFPA 1033 Fire Investigator within one year of appointment. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.

Compensation and Benefits
The starting salary will range between $83,538 to $104,900 per year, dependent upon experience and qualifications. The City of Lenexa offers a comprehensive benefits package including:
