Job: Fire Alarm System Technician 

SCA Occup: 23290 Fire Alarm System Mechanic

Salary Grade: Federal Wage Determination or Collective Bargaining Agreement

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

There are no direct reports with this position.

 

 

POSITION SUMMARY:   

Under general supervision, the Fire Alarm System Technician inspects, tests, maintains, and repairs installed fire alarm detection and mass notification systems in accordance with manufacturer’s specifications and National Fire Protection Association standards. Work may be reviewed by supervision for general compliance to acceptable trade practices and procedures. This position may provide technical guidance to lower level technicians.

 

 

TYPICAL DUTIES:  

1. *Analyzes blueprints, schematics, drawings, and programming of fire alarm and/or other related electrical systems for the purpose of determining the efficient installation of new or upgraded systems.2. *Inspects fire alarm equipment visually and replaces defective components; tests initiating and signal circuits, detectors, and system transmitter, and makes needed repairs.3. *Coordinates with assigned Foreman and/or other trades for the purpose of completing projects and work orders efficiently.4. *Diagnoses causes of electrical problems or failures in assigned systems for the purpose of identifying equipment and/or systems repair.5. *Informs personnel regarding procedures and/or status of work orders for the purpose of providing information for making decisions, taking appropriate action and/or complying with health and building regulations.6. *Inspects electrical/fire alarm/mass notification systems and their components for the purpose of evaluating condition, identifying necessary repairs, and recommending preventative maintenance.7. *Installs electrical system components as assigned (e.g., panels, audible/visual alarms, pull stations, detectors, etc.) for the purpose of providing enhanced and/or upgraded system capabilities.8. *Maintains assigned, tools and test equipment for the purpose of ensuring availability of equipment in the workplace.9. *Monitors the electrical/fire alarm/mass notification system work of outside contractors for the purpose of ensuring that the projects are satisfactorily completed and within local/state/federal and district codes, regulations, and specifications.10. *Participates in meetings, workshops, training, and seminars, as assigned for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform job functions.11. *Prepares written materials for the purpose of documenting activities and/or conveying information.12. *Responds to emergency situations during and after hours for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns.13. *Transports a variety of tools, equipment, and supplies for the purpose of ensuring the availability of materials required at job site.14. Performs other duties and special projects as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

•Minimum of five-year work experience as a Fire Alarm System Technician performing fire alarm and equipment installation, repair and maintenance, testing and certification, in a commercial, industrial or large facility environment.•Knowledge of NFPA Standards and experience with Monaco Transmitter Systems, EST, Honeywell, and FAP’s.•Applies advanced technical knowledge to solve complex problems that typically cannot be solved solely by referencing manuals or similar documents.•Knowledge of commercial fire alarm systems, and ability to read and understand blueprints.•Knowledge of local, state, and federal regulations regarding repair and maintenance for occupied spaces.•Ability to manage and accurately track material resources and time and adapt to changing work priorities.•Ability to estimate time and materials, and manage resources•Demonstrated organizational, problem-solving, and common-sense skills.•Ability to work safely•Customer service skills to act responsively to customer inquiries and requests and escalate the more difficult matters appropriately.•Communication skills to provide procedural and factual information, and to follow instructions.•Flexibility to build effective working relationships with staff, customers, and others.•Ability to travel to various facilities, and to work independently and as part of a team.

 

 

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS: 

High School Diploma or GED

Technical/other training

 

 

CERTIFICATES REQUIRED:  

The following licenses or certificates may be required depending on local, state and/or contract requirements:

 

Valid Driver's License

 

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:  

Employees must have the ability to perform the following physical demands for extended periods of time with or without assistance: •Maneuvering to and around equipment•Bending, kneeling, stooping, and reaching•Lifting and moving equipment up to 50 pounds•Climbing ladders or step stools•Monitoring gauges, controls, and/or computer systems

 

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:  

Work is performed at a customer’s location in office, shop, warehouse, or outdoor environment. May require driving to and from worksite locations. Equipment can be located in crawl spaces, rooftops, and outside facility. Employees may be exposed to hazardous and/or toxic substances, electrical shock, noise from equipment, and depending on external weather conditions, wind, rain, cold, and heat.
