  • Oversee the School Store and transportation operations for efficiency.

St. Margaret's School is seeking a full-time Financial Controller excited about working in a dynamic team environment supporting our school community. This is a director level role. Your primary objective is to be responsible for accounting practices, the accounting team, maintenance of fiscal records, preparation, promotion, and interpretation of financial reports for management and external groups.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Responsible for owning and managing all aspects of the daily financial operations
  • Supervise finance staff professionals and provide ongoing guidance and mentoring as required
  • Ensure all day-to-day activities are completed on a timely basis and followed up
  • Create various ad hoc management reports and analysis as required
  • Follow up on difficult past due student accounts as necessary
  • Meet with parents to discuss financial issues
  • Liaise with external parties on provincial, federal, and annual fiscal audits
  • Prepare various year-end schedules and analyses related to the year-end audit
  • Create Excel templates for budgeting/forecasting and other processes to streamline processes and improve systems
  • Oversee the School Store and inventory processes for accuracy and efficiency
  • Oversee the SMS transportation function and staff

Education and Experience
  • Professional Accounting Designation (CPA) is required, with an ongoing commitment to professional development.
  • Minimum of 5+ years' experience in a full-cycle professional accounting environment, preferably non-profit or have a strong understanding of fund accounting.

Required Knowledge and Skills
  • Systems level thinking and strong accounting and finance mental models.
  • Strong analytical and financial analysis, ensuring compliance with accounting standards and accountability to internal budgets
  • Specific knowledge of enterprise systems such as Great Plains, databases and report development
  • Strong understanding of current software technology, and the ability to work with IT to make recommendations in system improvements
  • Ability to supervise other finance professionals, delegate responsibilities and provide positive guidance in a team environment
  • Commitment to maintaining excellent communications with all stakeholders, both internal and external (eg. banks, auditors, vendors)
  • Ability to present ideas confidently in presentations and writing
  • Highly proficient use of Excel and other Microsoft applications, "AI aware" a bonus.
