Position Summary:

The Controller is responsible for the casino's overall finance operations. This role provides hands-on leadership for accounting, reporting, budgeting, procurement, and regulatory requirements (including audit and compliance requirements), while overseeing and supporting the Staff Accountant and liaison with internal and external stakeholders as required.

Key Accountabilities:

Financial Accounting & Reporting
  • Oversee full-cycle accounting for the casino, including:
    • Gaming and hospitality revenue
    • Treasury and cash controls
    • Receivables, prepaids, and accruals
    • Indirect and withholding taxes
  • Manage month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes to ensure timely and accurate financial reporting
  • Review reconciliations, working papers, and journal entries prepared by the Staff Accountant
  • Prepare GAAP compliance financial statements
  • Respond to inquiries related to financial results and accounting treatment

Budgeting & Financial Oversight
  • Support the development and coordination of the annual operating budget
  • Review actual results against budget and provide variance analysis to operational leaders
  • Identify financial risks, trends, and opportunities for improved cost control
  • Responsible for overall purchasing activities, including ordering, demand management, supplier relationship, and supporting strategic sourcing initiatives
  • Develop and implement purchasing strategy, procurement procedures and guidelines, and assist with establishing appropriate buying limits
  • Negotiate and review supplier contracts

Procurement

Compliance, Audit & Controls
  • Ensure compliance with accounting standards, gaming regulations, tax requirements, and internal controls
  • Oversee GST, PST, and withholding tax filings and remittances
  • Act as the primary finance contact for auditors, regulators, and external advisors
  • Review and strengthen financial processes and controls to improve efficiency and accuracy

Systems & Process Ownership
  • Maintain the integrity of accounting systems and sub-systems (e.g., Sage)
  • Play a key role in ERP setup, configuration, and ongoing optimization
  • Ensure financial documentation, policies, and procedures are current and audit-ready

People Leadership & Communication
  • Provide direction, coaching, and performance feedback to the Staff Accountant
  • Liaise effectively with the Site Lead and operational departments
  • Provide regular, plain-language updates to site leadership on financial risks, issues, and upcoming requirements
  • Present financial results at Board meetings

Education and Qualifications:
  • CPA designation
  • 5-7 years of progressive accounting experience, including 2+ years in a senior or lead role
  • Strong understanding of internal controls, financial reporting, and tax compliance
  • Advanced Excel skills
  • Purchasing experience an asset
  • Experience with ERP systems (Sage experience an asset)
  • Comfortable operating independently and setting priorities in a small, fast-paced environment
