Full Job Description

We are seeking a a hands-on, tech-forward Financial Controller to build and own the financial infrastructure of a scaling, multi-entity business. This is not a maintenance role; it's a build role. You'll design the chart of accounts, own the close process, and put in place the systems and controls that let us scale with confidence. We want someone who treats accounting as both a technical discipline and a systems-design problem: someone who can look at a messy process and see how to automate, simplify, and control it.

We strongly prefer a CPA, both for the rigor it signals and to future-proof our finance function as we grow. We also strongly prefer candidates with prior experience in financial services, given the regulatory rigor, controls discipline, and reporting standards that industry demands.
What You'll Do
  • Own the monthly, quarterly, and annual close process across multiple entities, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and GAAP compliance
  • Design and maintain a scalable chart of accounts that supports multi-entity consolidation and clean reporting as we grow
  • Manage and continuously improve AP/AR processes, including vendor and customer workflows, aging, and collections
  • Own bank, credit card, and balance sheet reconciliations, and build controls that catch discrepancies early
  • Serve as the internal expert on Ramp and Sage (or equivalent ERP/spend management tools), optimizing workflows, integrations, and automations between systems
  • Build and document scalable accounting processes and internal controls that can support the business through multiple stages of growth
  • Partner with leadership on financial reporting, entity structuring, and intercompany transactions
  • Identify opportunities to automate manual accounting work using modern tools, integrations, and light technical solutions (APIs, scripts, workflow automation)
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP and prepare the company for increasing levels of financial scrutiny (audits, banking relationships, and potentially public-company readiness)
  • Act as a thought partner to leadership, bringing critical thinking to financial decisions, not just execution of tasks
Who you are
  • A systems thinker who can see how people, process, and technology connect
  • Detail-oriented with a bias toward accuracy, structure, and accountability
  • Able to operate independently while driving cross-functional alignment
  • Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple projects and initiatives simultaneously.
Required Qualifications
  • 10+ years of progressive accounting/controllership experience, including multi-entity environments
  • Deep, hands-on knowledge of GAAP, including revenue recognition, accruals, and consolidations
  • Proven experience designing or redesigning a chart of accounts
  • Strong working knowledge of Ramp, Sage, or comparable modern finance/ERP stacks
  • Track record of building AP/AR and reconciliation processes from the ground up or significantly improving existing ones
  • Comfort working in a fast-moving, evolving environment where processes are still being defined
  • Genuinely tech-forward: excited by automation, integrations, and modern finance tooling, not just familiar with them
  • Strong critical thinking, you're able to diagnose root causes, not just symptoms, and to push back with sound reasoning
  • Self-starter who can operate with a high degree of autonomy and ownership
  • Excellent communication skills, able to translate financial detail into clear insight for non-finance stakeholders
Preferred Qualifications
  • CPA strongly preferred
  • Prior experience in the financial services industry strongly preferred
  • Prior experience at a company that scaled through multiple funding stages
  • Experience implementing or migrating finance systems (e.g., moving to a new ERP, integrating spend management tools)
  • Exposure to audit processes (internal or external)
  • Experience with financial automation tools, scripting, or API-based integrations between finance systems

You'll be one of the architects of our financial backbone; the systems, controls, and processes you build now will directly shape how well we scale. This is a rare opportunity to build rather than inherit, with real ownership over how the company's finance function matures. Potomac is not your typical asset manager. We cut through the industry BS with brutal transparency and an obsession with execution. If you're looking for a slow pace and low volume, this isn't for you.

If you want to drive, build, and scale, this is your shot.
