Responsibilities for this Position

General Dynamics Mission Systems has an opening for a Field Support Representative (FSR) to support the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) in Northwestern California. The selected candidate may also be required to provide temporary coverage at other FSR locations across the West Coast Region and nationwide. The primary Area of Responsibility (AOR) includes sites in Sector Humboldt Bay and Sector San Francisco. The candidate will be required to drive a company-supplied vehicle to cover a minimum of nine Rescue 21 sites in Northwestern California: one Coast Guard Sector (SCC), three Coast Guard Stations (STA), and five Remote Fixed Facilities (RFFs).

 

The selected candidate will be located in Northwestern California, with specific location to be discussed during the hiring process.

 

The FSR will work out of their home and will be provided a GDMS-supplied vehicle, tools, and supplies necessary to maintain the Rescue 21 sites, including a regional depot spares location. The primary responsibility of this role is the equipment and system support of the Rescue 21 communication and direction-finding system at remote sites in USCG Sectors Humboldt Bay and San Francisco. The FSR will provide emergency repair response coverage and total system preventive maintenance coverage, which will require driving and, at times, flying for site access. The successful candidate will have detailed knowledge of system tactical employment and optimization and the ability to document failures and corrective actions in accordance with proper procedures and methods. This role operates independently in most situations and requires the preparation and submission of periodic status reports and inventories as required by operational procedures.

 

Field activities will include installing, maintaining, integrating, troubleshooting, testing, and servicing fielded systems and products at customer sites. The FSR will diagnose and repair mechanical, hardware, software, and system failures using established procedures and submit reports on system reliability metrics to technical and regional support centers. Additionally, the FSR will set up and utilize specialized test and diagnostic equipment to isolate malfunctions. The FSR works closely with design engineering in evaluating product performance and conducting field trials and will conduct start-up, cutover, and checkout activities on newly installed systems. Site and equipment inspections will be completed to perform preventative and corrective maintenance. This position will work with more senior FSRs to plan and implement system configurations to meet specific mission requirements, conduct technical seminars and training for customers, provide on-the-job training for field service staff members and customers, and deliver over-the-shoulder and refresher training to users in the field as required.

 

Representative Duties and Tasks

  • Performs preventive and corrective maintenance on Rescue 21 communication and direction-finding systems at USCG Sector Humboldt Bay and Sector San Francisco sites
  • Performs field activities including the installation, start-up, cutover, and checkout of newly installed systems; maintains, integrates, troubleshoots, tests, and services fielded systems and products at customer sites; and sets up and utilizes specialized test and diagnostic equipment to isolate malfunctions
  • Troubleshoots and diagnoses system and equipment interface problems during installations and ongoing operations
  • Conducts site and equipment inspections to perform preventative and corrective maintenance
  • Performs equipment and system acceptance testing following established procedures
  • Maintains complete and accurate logs and documentation of all work orders, spare part inventories, and other reports as necessary
  • Provides technical support independently, displaying a high degree of resourcefulness and initiative
  • Maintains professional working relationships with USCG personnel and serves as the on-site GDMS representative for day-to-day operational support
  • May support installation activities for antenna systems, towers, and associated infrastructure at Rescue 21 sites within the assigned AOR
  • Conducts technical training and product briefings with customers, vendors, and company representatives
  • Installs and repairs equipment; instructs customers in equipment operation; provides technical assistance; and checks equipment for malfunctions
  • Conducts technical analysis of product implementations, modifications, and enhancements in accordance with specific customer specifications
  • Troubleshoots technical problems and issues, determines technical solutions in accordance with product and customer specifications, and recommends actions to company or customer representatives
  • Implements test plans and procedures in accordance with contract requirements for the verification of deliverable systems
  • Travel is required more than 50% of the time

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong understanding of technologies associated with supported systems and their application within the customer environment, including detailed knowledge of system tactical employment and configuration
  • Advanced knowledge of Cisco commands; strong knowledge of advanced routing, switching commands, and protocols
  • Ability to use terminal emulation software (e.g., PuTTY, HyperTerminal, or equivalent) to access and configure network devices
  • Ability to identify and load an Internal Operating System
  • Ability to troubleshoot basic program-related faults
  • Ability to act as a system technical advisor for all levels of customer leadership
  • Strong knowledge of test and diagnostic equipment such as multimeters, oscilloscopes, network analyzers, and similar tools
  • Strong knowledge of auxiliary power unit repair
  • Strong knowledge of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) repair and maintenance
  • Familiarity with USCG operations or military maritime communication systems
  • Experience with RF communications systems and/or direction-finding equipment
  • Ability to work independently in remote and outdoor environments with limited supervision
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Valid U.S. driver's license with a clean driving record

Option 3 – Military Technical Training:

Completion of a U.S. military technical training program (minimum 25 weeks) in a relevant technical discipline, along with a minimum of six years of related experience is required. Industry certifications are highly preferred.
