About the role:

The Fellow Engineer will serve as a technical leader within Exploratory Programs, driving the development of breakthrough medical device technologies that address unmet clinical needs. This role is responsible for advancing innovative concepts from ideation through exploratory design transfer while generating high-value intellectual property and enabling future product pipelines. Working in a highly collaborative environment, the Fellow Engineer will leverage deep expertise in cardiovascular therapies, catheter-based technologies and medical device development to create differentiated solutions that improve patient outcomes and support long-term business growth.

Work Mode:

At Boston Scientific, we value collaboration and synergy. This role follows an onsite work model, requiring employees to be in our Maple Grove, MN office 5 days per week.

Your responsibilities will include:
  • Lead the research, development and evaluation of novel medical device technologies to advance existing and emerging therapies.
  • Independently identify and develop innovative solutions that address unmet clinical needs while generating valuable intellectual property and patent opportunities.
  • Manage multiple exploratory and scalability development projects simultaneously, ensuring activities are executed on time, within budget and in alignment with business objectives.
  • Drive research and development activities throughout the exploratory phase of product development programs.
  • Collaborate with physicians, clinical experts, suppliers and cross-functional stakeholders to identify opportunities, define requirements and accelerate development timelines.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies, materials and manufacturing processes to support scalability and future product innovation.
  • Develop and implement new test methods and analytical approaches to assess device performance, reliability and feasibility.
  • Utilize data-driven decision-making and appropriate statistical methodologies to guide design and development activities.
  • Prepare for and lead concept reviews, presenting technical findings and recommendations to cross-functional and senior leadership teams.
  • Demonstrate deep understanding of design intent and clinical application to generate value-added concepts and differentiated product solutions.
  • Partner with highly skilled technicians to develop fabrication processes, prototypes and early-stage manufacturing methods.
  • Research, evaluate and recommend materials and component technologies to optimize device performance and manufacturability.
  • Collaborate with external suppliers to source components and identify outsourcing opportunities that accelerate development cycles.
  • Prepare comprehensive technical documentation, including intellectual property disclosures, concept reports, test protocols, test results, drawings and design records.
  • Support exploratory design transfer activities by providing technical leadership and subject matter expertise to downstream product development teams.
  • Translate complex technical data and findings into clear recommendations that influence strategic decisions across technical, commercial and executive stakeholders.


Required qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, biomedical engineering, physics or a related technical discipline.
  • Minimum of 12 years' experience in medical device engineering.
  • Proven track record of developing medical devices from concept through design transfer, resulting in successful commercial products.
  • Demonstrated history of generating core intellectual property and patents.
  • Strong expertise in cardiovascular therapies, catheter technologies and interventional medical devices.
  • Proficiency with CAD software, preferably SolidWorks.
  • Experience with mechanical and/or electrical design, engineering drawings, tolerance analysis and computer-aided design methodologies.
  • Excellent hands-on prototyping, verification testing, troubleshooting and failure analysis skills.
  • Strong quantitative analysis, problem-solving and decision-making capabilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently in ambiguous environments and drive complex technical challenges to resolution.
  • Proven ability to influence and lead cross-functional teams to achieve business objectives.
  • Excellent written, verbal and presentation communication skills.


Preferred qualifications:
  • Master's degree or Ph.D. in engineering, biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, physics or a related technical field.
  • Experience developing FDA Class III medical devices.
  • Medical device product development experience with successful programs progressing from concept through commercialization.
  • Knowledge of polymers, extrusion processes, injection molding and metallurgy.
  • Experience working within regulated quality systems, including FDA Quality System Regulation (QSR), ISO 13485 and Medical Device Directive (MDD) requirements.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical design principles and product development methodologies.
  • Familiarity with statistical analysis techniques; proficiency with Minitab preferred.
  • Knowledge of ASME Y14.5 geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Demonstrated leadership, coaching and mentoring capabilities.
  • Collaborative mindset with a strong commitment to team success and shared business objectives.
  • Experience developing innovative cardiovascular, structural heart, electrophysiology or other catheter-based medical device technologies.
