Job Summary and Qualifications

Under the general direction of the Director of Plant Operations, the Plant Operations Manager is responsible for assisting the Director of Plant Operations in the overall operation of the Plant Operations Department inclusive of administrative and technical operation. Performs and supervises preventive maintenance schedules. Assists in computing costs, scheduling and expediting operations and repairs, supervises and assists with emergency and major repair jobs, and inspects building and grounds. Assists in ordering equipment and supplies. Chairman of various committees and responsible to detect, minimize, and control fires and fire hazards and conduct fire drills. Manages contracted services for Plant Operations Department, including construction. Assumes duties of building operations in absence of Director of Plant Operations will serve as Safety Officer.

What you will do in the role:

  • Management of Engineering personnel on a daily basis to insure quality (100%) and productivity is at 85%
  • Manages the repairs, maintenance and PM's of all communication systems using either qualified in house personnel or outside vendors
  • Manages comprehensive grounds maintenance to ensure the medical center grounds are adequately maintained from both appearance and safety standpoint
  • Orientates new employees related to proper procedures for operations, maintenance and repair of facilities/equipment as well as safety procedures and department policies
  • Initiates and maintains in-service training program for each skill level. Documentation must pass JCAHO with accommodations.
  • Complete a thorough evaluation on time which reflects performance of the entire year
  • Schedules work and personnel to ensure adequate manpower availability to meet the required 24 hour per day coverage and work load
  • Establishes and administers a comprehensive preventative maintenance program
  • Insures compliance with Federal, State and City ordinances, laws, and acts -- and other such appropriate standards -- as may apply to the operation, maintenance and repair of HCA Huston Healthcare Northwest Facility
  • Advises the Director on structural changes and additions. Prepares plans for small alterations and remodeling. Estimates cost of remodeling, plans work flow and alteration progress
  • Maintains and updates all standards of operation as related to JCAHO Environment of Care. Must get an accreditation with accommodations.
  • Study and work with outside vendors to keep the facilities up to date related to energy Management programs, operations, equipment, and techniques
  • Plans and schedules repairs from outside vendors, must evaluate the work to be done will meet the present operations if not exceed and does not affect the facilities daily operation. Prepare documentation for the Director's approval.
  • Act as in house Fire Marshall for the hospital and M.O.B. Must keep appropriate records and providing for adequate fire drills and all inspections performed by outside vendors
  • Evaluates all mechanical and electrical systems on an annual basis to prepare improvements and replacement for capital request process
  • Will work with all personnel (hands on) to assist, train, or just set the example for the Engineering personnel to follow. (Highly productive)
  • Work as the Director in his absence. All paper work, project and operations continuous as if the Director was never absence.
  • Maintain and insure all Engineering areas are clean and safe. Paint according to codes and ready for spot inspection.
  • Assist willingly all of the Engineering technicians as needed or directed
  • Uses good telephone courtesy (Identify department and your name)
  • Adheres to hospital and department policies and procedures
  • Participates and conducts as needed monthly department meetings
  • Responds to all emergency codes
  • Participates and response to all Hospital emergencies, including, but not limited to fire, bomb threads, disaster codes, security codes, and all other emergencies as required the department supervisor and director
  • Ensure all assigned task are completed according to policy and procedure, JACHO, NFPA 99, Life Safety Code 101, TDH licensing standards, and all other NFPA Codes as needed
  • All work will be done according to department standards
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or directed


What qualifications you will need:

  • 5 years previous experience in a commercial plant operations and 3 to 5 years in management/supervisor in a commercial setting. (Hospital setting preferred). Must have working knowledge in cooling systems, heating systems, electrical systems, mechanical systems, control systems, electronic systems, emergency power systems, etc.
  • Stationary Engineer, Maintenance Electric, or other license preferred.
  • Bachelors degree from an accredited university or college preferred with in four years of hire.
