Position Highlights Maintains, operates and oversees the operation of the model shop. Devises special test equipment required for the performance of high-level testing and research within the lab.
Duties1. Produces, by fabrication and high precision machining, specialized research equipment by analyzing user requests in order to understand the intended application of equipment and to determine the most suitable materials, designs and fabrication techniques, determining and and/or modifying requirements and details to improve or meet specifications or allowing for machining/fabrication capabilities.
2. Devises special test equipment and designs new or prototype equipment required for internal and external clients, preparing working or finished drawings for tender, manufacturing or inclusion in reports, estimating the time and cost required to fabricate equipment and if required arranging for fabrication by outside shops; liaises with others within the industry to secure future work for Powertech.
3. Takes industrial quality photographs of test procedures, test equipment, installations, prototypes and samples; sets up photographic equipment including illumination; examines, processes photographs and selects suitable ones for inclusion in reports or marketing requirements.
4. Recommends acquisitions of new or replacement model shop equipment parts, materials or model shop consumables; investigates prices and alternative suppliers, maintains laboratory equipment, tools, jigs, consumables and safety equipment.
5. Provides operating instructions and guidance to other staff using shop equipment and tools; ensures safety of other staff using shop.
6. Performs duties of a minor nature related to the above duties which do not affect the rating of the job.
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities Required:- Good working knowledge of the procedures and methods required to machine and fabricate specialized research and testing equipment and components.
- Ability to estimate the time and cost required in equipment fabrication.
- Good drafting skills.
- Working knowledge of how to calibrate, maintain and repair related machine shop instrumentation and equipment and apply accepted testing standards.
- Good working knowledge of the properties of metals and plastics.
- Basic technical report writing skills.
- Ability to assess the quality of fabrication work done by others.
- Good analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent knowledge of related testing standards and procedures.

Qualifications:Completion of Machinist trades qualification and four (4) years of related fabrication shop experience.

Completion of a formal trades' qualification (other than Machinist) and four (4) years of directly relevant machining or fabricating experience in a fabrication shop.
