Full Job Description
Position Overview

As an advanced technical specialist, you will diagnose and repair complex mechanical, electrical, CAN/network, drivability, HVAC, diesel, and hybrid/EV systems across passenger cars, trucks, and motorhomes. We practice evidence-based diagnostics, proving root causes before replacing parts and verifying every repair.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities
  • Advanced Diagnostics: Perform complete end-to-end diagnosis and repair on complex mechanical, electrical, CAN/network, drivability, HVAC, emissions, etc and computer-controlled systems across passenger, light/medium-duty, hybrid/EV vehicles and motorhomes. Interpret diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs), live PID scan data, wiring schematics, lab scope waveforms, and system pressures. Utilize advanced tooling including oscilloscopes, multimeters, smoke machines, and pressure gauges to verify root causes and execute precise repairs to manufacturer specifications.
  • Technical Documentation & Inspection: Perform comprehensive Digital Vehicle Inspections on assigned vehicles and document diagnostic procedures using Graham Auto Repair's digital shop management system. Documentation should clearly establish the diagnostic pathway: Concern 12 Testing Performed 12 Test Results 12 Root Cause 12 Recommended Correction. Capture supporting photos, videos, scan data, test results and measurements to assist Service Advisors and allow another qualified technician to continue the repair without unnecessarily repeating diagnostic work.
  • Quality Assurance: Perform appropriate pre-diagnostic test drives to verify customer concerns and post-repair test drives to confirm repair effectiveness. Complete repairs according to applicable manufacturer specifications, accepted repair practices, and Graham Auto Repair quality standards. Verify that the original concern has been corrected before the vehicle is returned to service.
  • Peer Support: Assist apprentice and mid-level technicians with diagnostic test plans and troubleshooting.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Experience: Minimum of 5 years of professional hands-on automotive diagnostic and repair experience in a professional repair environment. Demonstrated advanced ability in electrical diagnostics, voltage-drop testing, oscilloscope use, CAN/network troubleshooting, engine performance, drivability diagnosis, and complex fault isolation. Experience with diesel vehicles and motorhomes is strongly preferred.
  • Licensing: Active, valid driver's license and driving record that meets Graham Auto Repair's applicable insurance and vehicle-use requirements when vehicle operation and road testing are essential functions of the position.
  • Certifications: Active ASE certifications are preferred, with ASE A1-A8, A9 & L1 strongly preferred. EPA Section 609 certification is required within 30 days of employment if not already held. Ongoing technical training and professional development are required.
  • Tools: Complete professional inventory of personal hand tools, power tools, and electrical testing equipment appropriate for advanced automotive diagnosis and repair. Graham Auto Repair provides major shop diagnostic equipment, specialty equipment, service information, and other company-owned diagnostic resources
