Description The Executive Director of Marketing and Communications for Alumni and Development will report to the Senior Vice President for Development and Alumni Affairs. The Executive Director serves as a strategic marketing and communications leader responsible for bridging the Development and Alumni Affairs division with the central Marketing and Communications team. This role designs, drives, and oversees comprehensive, multi-channel communication strategies to enhance the visibility and reputation of Hofstra University among alumni, donors, and key prospects. Serving as the strategic lead for annual giving, the Executive Director oversees the planning, execution, and analysis of comprehensive annual fund operations, multi-channel solicitation pipelines, and high-impact content creation to drive donor acquisition, retain loyal contributors, and maximize unrestricted annual revenue.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Strategic Annual Fund Management & Multi-Channel Appeals: Oversees the strategic planning, goal setting, segmenting, and execution of all Annual Fund operations, including multi-channel direct mail, email appeals, digital fundraising, and giving days to drive overall donor participation and dollar growth.
- Content Creation & Messaging Strategy:Conceptualizes, writes, edits, and oversees the hands-on creation of high-impact print publications, digital campaign assets, email newsletters, stewardship reports, scripts, and web/social content tailored to varied audiences.
- Brand Consistency & Editorial Oversight: Oversees all alumni and development marketing, communications, and solicitation materials to ensure message alignment, visual representation, and brand consistency across all touchpoints.
- Cross-Divisional & Executive Collaboration: Collaborates closely with senior leadership, deans, development officers, and alumni relations staff to identify engagement opportunities and generate compelling content that supports unit-level and university-wide fundraising goals.
- Data Analytics, AI & Campaign Optimization:Leverages data analytics, AI tools, and key performance metrics to evaluate campaign effectiveness, optimize marketing strategies, and personalize messaging for diverse donor segments.
- Higher Education & Advancement Innovation: Stays current on evolving trends and best practices in development, annual giving, and marketing communications, integrating innovative techniques to elevate institutional engagement.
Qualifications - Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Communications, Public Relations, or a related field.
- 8-10+ years of progressively responsible leadership experience in marketing, communications, annual giving, or higher education development.
- Proven track record of developing and executing successful annual fund or direct response fundraising campaigns.
- Demonstrated mastery in multi-platform content creation, strategic storytelling, and executive-level written and verbal communication.
- Strong strategic planning, budget management, and project leadership skills, with a proven ability to manage complex initiatives across matrixed teams.
- Proficiency with modern digital marketing tools, content management systems, CRM platforms, and emerging AI technologies.
- Deep understanding of fundraising principles, donor cultivation, annual giving metrics, and stewardship best practices.
