Job Description
This is an exciting opportunity to lead a $37 million, state-of-the-art YMCA campus designed to serve the rapidly growing Wesley Chapel and surrounding communities. The Mary W. Sierra YMCA features a 50,000-square-foot family center, three outdoor pools with water-park amenities, athletic fields, a field house, fitness and wellness spaces, gymnasium, studios, child watch, and a wide range of programs and services for individuals and families.
This is an opportunity to build a culture, grow a new YMCA, develop a team, engage a community, and establish the long-term identity and impact of one of the Tampa Y's newest and most significant investments.
The Executive Director provides overall leadership for the day-to-day operation of the Mary W. Sierra Family YMCA, with responsibility for membership growth, program development, financial performance, fundraising, volunteer engagement, community partnerships, staff leadership, facility stewardship, safety, and the overall member experience.
The position will lead an operation with a $5 million budget and more than 4,000 household membership units, with significant opportunity for continued growth. The successful candidate will be responsible for achieving organizational goals related to membership, engagement, revenue growth, operating performance, market share, program quality, and member satisfaction.
Most importantly, the Executive Director will be the face of the YMCA in the community-building relationships with members, volunteers, civic and business leaders, schools, community organizations, and other partners to expand the Y's reach and influence.
Key Areas of Leadership Include: Membership & Growth: Build and retain a strong membership base while creating an exceptional experience that drives engagement, satisfaction, and long-term loyalty.Program Leadership: Develop and expand high-quality programs that respond to community needs and maximize the incredible resources of the Mary Sierra YMCA campus.
Team Leadership: Recruit, develop, motivate, and retain a high-performing team that is passionate about the YMCA mission, safety, service, and the member experience.
Financial Leadership: Lead the center's financial performance, including budgeting, forecasting, revenue growth, operating margin, and long-term sustainability.
Fundraising & Development: Lead annual giving and other fundraising efforts while developing relationships with donors, businesses, foundations, and community partners.
Volunteer & Advisory Board Leadership: Engage volunteers and community leaders in advancing the YMCA mission and building a strong foundation of community support.
Community Engagement: Establish the Mary Sierra YMCA as a trusted and highly visible community partner throughout Wesley Chapel, Pasco County, and the surrounding region.
Safety & Risk Management: Maintain an unwavering culture of safety and ensure compliance with YMCA policies, training requirements, emergency procedures, and applicable regulations.
Facility Stewardship: Ensure the campus, equipment, grounds, and facilities are maintained at the highest possible standard and reflect the quality of the YMCA experience.
Qualifications
We are seeking an entrepreneurial, relationship-oriented and results-driven leader who is energized by the opportunity to build something new.
The ideal candidate will bring experience leading a complex business, nonprofit, recreation, health and wellness, hospitality, or similar operation and will demonstrate the ability to:
- Build strong relationships quickly with members, staff, volunteers, and community leaders.
- Lead through growth and change while maintaining a strong culture and clear organizational expectations.
- Develop and execute strategies that grow membership, programs, revenue, and community impact.
- Manage a significant operating budget and use data and financial metrics to drive decision-making.
- Recruit, develop, and retain a high-performing leadership team.
- Cultivate donors, volunteers, community partners, and other sources of support.
- Balance the demands of day-to-day operations with a long-term vision for organizational growth.
- Communicate effectively with a diverse range of people and stakeholders.
- Demonstrate sound judgment, initiative, accountability, and a strong commitment to the YMCA mission.
- A bachelor's degree in business, nonprofit management, recreation, or a related field, or equivalent experience is required.
- Experience leading a YMCA, health and wellness center, recreation organization, nonprofit, or similar operation is strongly preferred. YMCA operational experience is especially valuable.
- The position description calls for experience with operations exceeding $3 million in revenue and 2,500 membership units, along with demonstrated fiscal management and financial development experience.
Essential Functions
Membership & Program Quality/Growth - Achieves all established goals and objectives through Association scorecard targets, including net promoter scores, budget margin, revenue growth, and expanding market share.
- Ensures all Tampa Y standards and best practices are implemented and followed. Applies YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to best practices, emergency procedures, medical and disciplinary situations and child abuse prevention.
- Ensures all associates are properly trained and prepared for emergency situations. This includes implementing and following training requirements in addition to ensuring proper reporting of all incidents/accidents according to risk management procedures.
- Ensures the safety and maintenance of well-maintained facilities, grounds and equipment, coordinating repairs and enhancements in coordination with Association Property Director.
- Actively participates in the Executive Leadership team, as well as select program cabinet groups.
- Leads Association initiatives as assigned.
Development/Fundraising - Leads center annual giving, major gifts, and/or endowment association goals, and ensures success by ensuring the implementation and delivery of best practices.
- Develops and maintains relationships with current and potential funding sources, both private and public.
- Understands the pressing community needs and generates support for our cause and proven solutions for meaningful, enduring impact and stronger communities.
Advisory Board Development - Assists and supports the Vice President with the Advisory Board and volunteer committees to educate the community about the work of the YMCA and its mission.
- Maintains contacts with political, business, and civic leaders, as well as community groups and schools to develop a solid volunteer structure.
- Represents and promotes the Y in the local community and develops positive working relationships with other organizations, businesses, and governmental entities. Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with community agencies in service delivery area.
Fiscal Management - Manages/provides oversight to the center budget, managing to/within assigned targets, and exceeds assigned operating margin.
- Prepares and updates revenue and expense forecasts to center budget as needed.
- Evaluates trends and opportunities and utilizes key metrics in decision making.
- Develops and implements plans to expand the reach and influence of the Y through expansion of program and membership within association guidelines.
Team Leadership - Provides leadership to all center staff members, serving as secondary supervisor to hire, develop, motivate, influence and retain a committed team passionate about the YMCA's mission, safety and service to members, and the Tampa Y promise.
- Provides leadership to all center staff members to create and maintain meaningful and impactful relationships with the members, program participants, volunteers and community leaders.
- Assists in all areas as assigned.
- Attends and actively engages in all all meetings , conferences, training, and events as assigned by supervisor.
- Performs all other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Required Certifications
- Must obtain within 30 days of employment and then maintain current certifications in CPR PRO, AED, First Aid, and Oxygen Administration.
- Maintain other required certifications as stated per Associatoin guidelines or directed by supervisor.
