Full Job Description
ESL Instructor (Full-Time Substitute)

The Full-time substitute ESL instructor supports the school's mission by providing excellent in-person and/or remote instruction that supports students' diverse educational backgrounds, learning styles, English language, and technological abilities during the absence of the students' teacher. During long-term substitute assignments, the substitute is responsible for creating materials specific to the assigned level, writing daily lesson plans to directly address all student needs, and administering schoolwide assessments. During daily short-term assignments, the substitute is expected to implement teacher lesson plans with fidelity. For long and short-term assignments, the substitute is expected to maintain accurate attendance records.

CORE WORKSTREAMS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Essential Instructional Functions
  • Language Acquisition & Modeling: Assist adult learners in acquiring the English language skills necessary to advance to the next ESL level, while consistently modeling good English pronunciation.
  • Lesson Planning & Adaptability: Prepare clear, concise daily lesson plans complete with measurable objectives, ensuring they are readily available to supervisors. Differentiate instruction to successfully provide for different learning styles and abilities. (long-term assignments)
  • Life Skills Instruction: Provide practical life skill instruction that empowers students to confidently navigate important systems and resources in the metropolitan Washington, DC area. (long-term assignments)

2. Classroom Management & Student Support
  • Environment & Engagement: Create and maintain a positive, welcoming learning environment tailored specifically for adult learners, actively encouraging student participation and regular attendance.
  • Policy Implementation: Uniformly implement and enforce established classroom policies and procedures to ensure consistency and structure.

3. Assessment, Tracking, and Reporting
  • Progress Monitoring: Systematically monitor student progress through the administration of TEAAL and CASAS tests. (long-term assignments)
  • Performance Evaluation: Continuously monitor and evaluate student performance, actively modifying day-to-day instruction accordingly to meet student needs. (long-term assignments)
  • Administrative Accuracy: Keep daily student attendance records strictly current within the Student Information System.

4. Flexibility
  • Campus Assignment: Primary assignment location is Harvard Street Campus, but long-term substitute assignments at the Sonia Gutierrez campus will be served through this position.
  • Class Assignment: Provide instruction to students across different levels (Orientation-Advanced English)

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND OTHER EXPERIENCES:
  • Must have at least two of the following:
    • Teaching Certification
    • Master's degree in Adult Education, Linguistics, TESOL, language studies, or related field
    • At least three years of teaching experience
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Proficiency in technology skills that include website navigation, Windows management, online learning tools (Zoom, Remind, GSuite, etc.), and Microsoft Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Experience in ESL and Adult Education preferred
  • Demonstrate knowledge and competence in both ESL preparation and Adult Education
  • Must be flexible and able to make adaptations to meet the academic needs of students with different learning skills and challenges
  • Work comfortably with people from diverse backgrounds
  • Excellent communication skills, be able to explain concepts to others effectively
  • Excellent organizational skills and timely completion of tasks
  • Fluently speak, read, and write in English
  • Knowledge and experience using Windows and Internet Explorer

SALARY RANGE AND BENEFITS:

We offer:
  • A competitive annual starting salary range of $55,000.00-$114,100.55 commensurate with experience.
  • 46 total days of time off (a combination of paid holidays, vacation, sick, and personal time) per year. This number increases over time.
