Engineering Project Team Leader - Electric Drivetrain Development

Role Description:

The Engineering Project Team Leader - Electric Drive Validation leads a team of test engineers to validate advanced drivetrain components and systems at Caterpillar's Technical Center as part of new product development programs or continuous product improvement projects.

Success factors for the Engineering Project Team Leader role are interpersonal, leadership, and strong communication skills. Significant challenges of this position are working with people: enhancing the team's creativity; facilitating the team's cooperation; clearly communicating the requirements and tasks, while gaining input from the team on refinement of same; translating both verbal and non-verbal information from the customer, management, and team members. Project team leaders are the spokesperson for the team in meetings with multiple levels of management and with the customer. The team leader must develop good networks to enable them to obtain resources and cooperation needed and remove roadblocks so that they can ensure the success of their team. Project team leaders may be called upon to give input to performance reviews for team members. Ever increasing skills in the role-based competencies of Managing Vision & Purpose, Decision Quality, and Negotiating are required.

What you will do:

The team leader role accounts for up to 50% of this assignment. The remainder of the time, the incumbent acts as an individual contributor, bringing technical expertise to the project as well. Team leaders must manage their own development, continuously learning through experience new business knowledge and skill. Program/project management and strong organizational skills are critical. Interpersonal, leadership, and strong communication skills are required.
  • Leading efforts for the specification, build, and commissioning of new test stands.
  • Defining program validation requirements.
  • Developing of testing standards and confirming adherence to standards during test execution
  • Ensuring lab tests are executed successfully to validate components / systems.
  • Providing engineering expertise in analyzing test data
  • Communicate results and making recommendations to customers, suppliers, team members, and other business units
  • Assist in identifying and troubleshooting hardware and software issues
  • Lead documenting findings in technical reports.
  • Mentoring and assisting others to fully contributing engineers
  • Develop and maintain technical expertise in Electric Drive Validation


Education and Experience Requirements:
  • Requires a bachelor's degree in an accredited Engineering, Computer Science, or Materials Science curriculum plus professional engineering experience.
  • Previous powertrain product development experience (design, test, or analysis).
  • Excellent Understanding of mechanical and electrical systems.

  • Team Management: Extensive knowledge of effective team building techniques; ability to form and manage effective teams.
  • Requirements Analysis: Extensive knowledge of tools, methods, and techniques of requirement analysis; ability to elicit, analyze and record required business functionality and non-functionality requirements to ensure the success of a system or software development project.
  • Troubleshooting Technical Problems: Extensive knowledge of troubleshooting approaches, tools and techniques; ability to anticipate, detect and resolve technical problems in a manufacturing or product management environment.
  • Product Design and Development: Extensive knowledge of product features; ability to design, build, and develop a new product, technology, or service from concept through to production.


Top candidates will possess:
  • Master's degree in an Engineering, Computer Science, or Materials Science curriculum
  • Experience with data analysis tools
  • Experience with data acquisition systems
  • Experience working in a lab test facility
  • Experience with electric drive systems and/or components
  • Experience with Caterpillar NPI and CPI systems
  • Demonstrated Technical leadership skills through the completion of complex projects

  • This position is located in Mossville, IL.
  • This position may require up to 10% travel.

Summary Pay Range:

$128,470.00 - $192,710.00

Compensation and benefits offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, job level, market location, job-related knowledge, skills, individual performance and experience. Please note that salary is only one component of total compensation at Caterpillar.
