Job Description:

Caterpillar's Earthmoving division is hiring for Engineering Project Team Leader in Peoria, IL!

Role Summary: In this role as an L6 Electronics Validation Engineer, you will ensure that Cat machines meet our end user's quality expectations by identifying, planning and leveraging validation opportunities earlier in the development cycles specifically at the component, system bench or machine development cycle. You will be heavily involved in working across Earthmoving with all product groups focused on validation activities on electrical and electronic controls across all subsystems. Your responsibilities will be to interface with system & component development teams, software developers, and machine level leaders to define validation requirements, plans, and monitor program health. Your planning will result in system test benches and machines (i.e. testbed, prototype, pilot, etc.) that arrive at any Proving Ground or Customer Site for machine validation in good operating condition, technical & program risks quantified, and machine & system validation plans are thoroughly documented.

What You'll Do (Job Duties)
  • Create a validation strategy and activity plan, collaboratively, with systems and global machine development groups
  • Educate system teams and product groups on validation expectations and key processes
  • Drive usage of such tools such as the Proactive Reliability Process, Design Verification Plan & Report's (DVP&R) and Requirement Based Virtual Product Development to evaluate the effectiveness of the validation activity plan on critical failure modes, and direct activities to mitigate risk.
  • Maintain solid connections between Product Groups, Process Partners, and lead a strong test and development team impacting their perception of validation as a partner in product development and safety.
  • Directing project staffing; motivating and developing project team and team members.
  • Overseeing project progress and costs; communicating status with stakeholders and participating functional areas; addressing and resolving problems.
  • Requires a degree in accredited Engineering, Computer Science, or Materials Science curriculum.

What You Have (Core Skills)
  • Product Design and Development: Knowledge of product features; ability to design, build, and develop a new product, technology, or service from concept through to production. Detailed knowledge and experience with machine sub-system software and overall machine software interactions.
  • Technical Excellence: Knowledge of a given technology and various application methods; ability to develop and provide solutions to complex technical challenges. Experience utilizing full vehicle software benches including Hardware In the Loop and Software In the Loop. Hands on bench, lab or machine experience connecting components, generating code and development.
  • Influencing Through Expertise: Knowledge of effective influencing tactics and strategies; ability to use these to deepen own expertise and impact or challenge decisions within and outside own organization. Must have ability to communicate technical information effectively with team members and others in the work group, as well Product Group, customers, and suppliers.
  • Project Management: Knowledge of effective project management strategies and tactics; ability to plan, organize, monitor, and control projects, ensuring efficient utilization of technical and administrative resources to achieve project objectives. Highly developed skills in program management, communication, and customer relations are essential.
  • Team Management: Knowledge of effective team building techniques; ability to form and manage effective teams. Requires a self-starter with strong technical leadership skills.
  • Requirements Analysis: Knowledge of tools, methods, and techniques of requirement analysis; ability to elicit, analyze and record required business functionality and non-functionality requirements to ensure the success of a system or software development project.
  • Troubleshooting Technical Problems: Knowledge of troubleshooting approaches, tools and techniques; ability to anticipate, detect and resolve technical problems in a manufacturing or product management environment.
  • A bachelor's degree in an Engineering field from and accredited college or university with at least 8 years of job-related (engineering) experience in electronics component or product development.


Top Candidates Will Also Have
  • Machine level validation or lab testing is preferred. Virtual Product Development experience is desired.
  • Product Group or system design experience.
  • APQP (FMEA, DVP&R) experience desired.
  • Expertise in real-time embedded software and model-based development using C/C++, Python, ROS/ROS2, and MATLAB/Simulink on RTOS and Linux platforms, integrating hardware, networks (CAN/Ethernet), simulation, and control for autonomous systems.
  • Experience working on at least 2-3 different machine electronic system architectures
  • Experience working with a global team
  • Communication courage (ability to speak up when necessary in front of NPI managers, VPs, Chief Engineers, Product Managers, etc.)


Summary Pay Range:

$128,470.00 - $192,710.00

Compensation and benefits offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, job level, market location, job-related knowledge, skills, individual performance and experience. Please note that salary is only one component of total compensation at Caterpillar.
