Position Overview

The Engineering Advisor is an enterprise-level technical authority who provides strategic, high-impact advisory support across transmission and substation engineering programs. This role leverages extensive industry experience to guide executive leadership, engineering organizations, and project teams on the most complex technical, execution, and risk-related challenges facing the business.

Operating as a trusted advisor, this role influences engineering strategy, governance, and technical direction across the organization without direct day-to-day people management responsibilities. The Engineering Advisor plays a critical role in safeguarding technical integrity, driving consistency, and enabling successful delivery of large-scale, high-risk infrastructure programs.

What You'll Do

Executive Technical Advisory & Leadership
  • Serve as a technical advisor for transmission and substation engineering activities
  • Provide expert guidance to executive leadership on complex technical, constructability, and delivery challenges
  • Advise on enterprise-level engineering risk, technical governance, and decision-making
  • Serve as an escalation point for critical technical issues across major programs and regions

Engineering Governance & Standards Leadership
  • Guide development, interpretation, and enforcement of engineering standards, policies, and best practices
  • Influence enterprise quality assurance and quality control strategies
  • Identify systemic technical risks and recommend proactive mitigation measures
  • Lead or support lessons-learned initiatives and technical improvement programs

Program & Portfolio Advisory Support
  • Provide advisory oversight across multiple large, complex transmission and substation programs
  • Participate in executive design reviews, project risk assessments, and constructability evaluations
  • Advise on change management, claims support, and technical dispute resolution
  • Support projects during critical phases, including pursuit, design development, construction, and closeout

Strategic & Business Advisory Support
  • Partner with executive leadership to shape long-term engineering strategy and technical capability development
  • Support business development and pursuit strategy with senior-level technical insight
  • Evaluate emerging technologies, delivery models, and industry trends for strategic adoption
  • Collaborate with Operations, Safety, Quality, Project Controls, Supply Chain, and Finance leaders to align technical strategy with business objectives

Mentorship, Influence & Industry Leadership
  • Provide mentorship and coaching to senior engineers and technical leaders
  • Influence engineering culture through knowledge sharing, technical guidance, and leadership by example
  • Represent the organization in high-level technical forums, industry committees, and client engagements
  • Serve as a trusted technical voice with clients, regulators, and industry partners


Travel Requirements

  • Percent of Time: Up to 10-25%, based on enterprise and program needs


What You'll Bring

Required Experience and Education
  • Bachelor of Science (B.S.) or graduate degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited university
  • 20+ of progressive experience in electric utility, power delivery, or infrastructure engineering
  • Extensive experience supporting transmission and substation engineering programs
  • Demonstrated ability to influence executive decision-making through sound technical judgment
  • Proven experience advising senior leaders on complex, high-risk technical challenges

Preferred Qualifications
  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) license strongly preferred
  • Experience operating at an enterprise or multi-region leadership level
  • Background in EPC, design-build, or utility environments

Technical & Professional Skills
  • Expert-level understanding of electric utility engineering principles, standards, and construction practices
  • Deep knowledge of applicable industry codes and standards (ANSI, ASTM, ACI, AISC, NEC, NESC, IEEE, IEC, etc.)
  • Exceptional analytical, problem-solving, and risk management capabilities
  • Strong business acumen and ability to balance technical rigor with commercial realities
  • Outstanding written, verbal, and executive-level communication skills
  • Ability to operate effectively in highly complex, ambiguous, and high-impact environments
