Position OverviewThe Engineer II will support the
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) by providing engineering analysis and technical research related to
motor vehicle safety, crashworthiness, and advanced vehicle technologies. This role requires the application of engineering principles to collect, analyze, and interpret complex transportation safety data to support federal research programs and safety policy initiatives.
The selected candidate will assist in evaluating crash data, emerging vehicle technologies, and safety systems, contributing to research reports, technical analyses, and presentations supporting NHTSA safety programs.
Key ResponsibilitiesEngineering & Technical Analysis- Apply engineering theories, techniques, and analytical methodologies to evaluate motor vehicle safety technologies and crash data.
- Conduct research and analysis on vehicle crashworthiness, restraint systems, and emerging automotive safety technologies.
- Analyze data related to vehicle crashes, traffic fatalities, and injury patterns.
Data Analysis & Research- Work with national crash databases including:
- Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS)
- Crash Investigation Sampling System (CISS)
- Crash Reporting Sampling System (CRSS)
- Integrate and analyze crash-related datasets from external sources such as:
- Federal Highway Administration (FHWA)
- U.S. Census Bureau
- R.L. Polk vehicle registration data
- Develop analysis plans and perform statistical or engineering evaluations of crash data.
Reporting & Documentation- Prepare technical reports, research summaries, and engineering documentation.
- Develop presentations and briefings for government stakeholders.
- Conduct research report reviews and synthesis of analytical findings.
Automotive Safety Technology Evaluation- Support research related to:
- Vehicle crashworthiness
- Restraint systems
- Full-scale vehicle crash testing
- Component-level testing
- Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS)
- New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) testing
- Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS)
Data Management- Utilize Microsoft Excel, Access, and other analytical tools to manage and analyze transportation safety datasets.
- Aggregate and maintain large datasets to support engineering analysis.
Required Qualifications- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or related field.
- 2+ years of experience in engineering analysis, transportation research, or automotive safety.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
- Experience developing technical reports and presentations.
- Strong analytical, research, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent attention to detail and data accuracy.
Preferred Qualifications- Experience working with NHTSA crash databases (FARS, CISS, CRSS).
- Knowledge of vehicle crashworthiness, restraint systems, and crash testing methodologies.
- Familiarity with FMVSS regulations and NCAP testing protocols.
- Experience analyzing vehicle safety technologies or ADAS systems.
- Experience working with transportation safety data or statistical analysis tools.
Physical Requirements- Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
- Ability to twist, bend, and squat occasionally.
Security Clearance- Must be able to obtain a Public Trust clearance.
- Requires U.S. Citizenship or a minimum of three years of U.S. residency.
