The Role
The Structural Engineer will serve as a key team member supporting the design, analysis, integration, and testing of submarine/carrier structural systems and components to meet U.S. Navy, SUBSAFE, and shipyard standards. The position involves both engineering design and hands-on field support in a fast-paced shipyard environment, working closely with design teams and trades personnel.
Key Responsibilities
Structural system design, integration, and testing activities for submarine/carrier hull structures, foundations, supports, and mechanical interfaces.
• Perform detailed structural analysis, stress evaluation, and load path verification
• Support of shipboard structural modifications, fabrication of equipment foundations, and shipboard corrosion evaluation / mitigation
• Develop, review, and execute structural procedures, and certification documentation.
• Support ship construction and outfitting by evaluating non-conformances, developing repair recommendations, and verifying implementation.
• Conduct shipchecks to confirm as-built conditions and ensure design compliance with engineering standards.
• Interface with NAVSEA, Electric Boat, and internal departments to coordinate design and testing activities and resolve technical issues.
• Provide on-site engineering support to resolve field issues related to alignment, fit-up, welding, and dimensional control.
• Prepare and present technical reports, analyses, and recommendations to management and external customers.
Analyzes, researches and develops structural engineering specifications involving metals, non-metallic or composite structural materials for product design, or operation of product to include structures, mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and electronics, power plant, armament, heating and ventilating, equipment and maintenance designs. Analyzes damage tolerance, durability, design allowables and structural modeling. Specific structural engineering specialties may include dynamics and loads, stability and stress fatigue and thermal analysis. Tools utilized may include CATIA, IDEAS, ProEngineer and a variety of software applications.
Must Have
Bachelor's Degree and 2 years of relevant exempt experience;
Master's Degree and 0 year of relevant professional experience
Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.
Nice to Have
• Familiarity with welding, fabrication, and assembly processes in a shipyard environment.
• Experience with FEA tools such as Teamcenter, ABAQUS and NASTRAN, FORTRAN, Matlab, python, etc. or similar
• Knowledge of structural response and design requirements for surface ship or submarines
• Structural design analysis experience
• Ability to interpret and review engineering drawings, specifications, and manufacturing documentation.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills for interfacing with trades, management, and government customers.
• Strong problem-solving, leadership, and mentoring skills with the ability to manage small project teams.
• DOD Security Clearance is preferred, but not required to start.
