About the role

We are looking for an Engineer - Mechanical Area Engineering to support the delivery of business objectives through the application of defect elimination, root cause analysis, project management, and technical support of on-site maintenance execution, operations and project teams.

This role is an opportunity for a highly motivated individual to make significant contributions to the safe and reliable operation and maintenance of critical assets in order to meet production requirements at the Rio Tinto Kennecott Smelter. Contributions will include but are not limited to:

  • Engineering and troubleshooting support of maintenance execution and operations teams
  • Identification, ownership and implementation of initiatives to deliver improvements in safety, asset performance, and cost
  • Capital project validation and delivery support
  • Initiation and facilitation of root cause analysis to mitigate acute and chronic asset failures
  • Reconciliation of production loss accounting data


About you

To be successfully considered for this role, you will have:

  • A Bachelor degree in Engineering (Mechanical preferred), or 5 years of equivalent experience
  • 2+ years of experience in engineering maintenance roles
  • An ability to work collaboratively in a small team
  • Demonstrated experience in delivering continuous improvement initiatives and projects
  • Experience with Defect Elimination processes and Root Cause Analysis methodology
  • Experience with failure analysis.


It will also be beneficial if you have:

  • Experience working in a fixed plant environment
  • Demonstrated knowledge of SAP or equivalent CMMS
  • Lean Six Sigma methodology experience or Black Belt Certification
  • Experience in smelting

Our Kennecott mine is a world-class, fully integrated copper mining operation, including a concentrator, smelter and refinery, located just outside Salt Lake City, Utah, in the United States.
