This position is part of the Production Standards group located in the Duke Energy Carolinas (DEC) headquarters in downtown Charlotte, NC. This work group is responsible for the development of standards used by design engineering. This role will be responsible for the development of standards for substation designs of T/T and T/D substations (new and existing). The standards developed may include specifications, design guides, template drawings (start files), CAD blocks, item numbers, compatible units (CUs), and multilevel CUs. This position plays a key role in improving consistency, safety, constructability, and efficiency across substation physical design work products by developing and maintaining the standards used by internal and external design teams.

Job Responsibilities

Major responsibilities include:

  • Develop and maintain production standards used for the physical design of T/T and T/D substations.

  • Apply applicable procedures, codes, standards, and industry practices to develop substation design standards, drawings, and material CUs.

  • Perform work in accordance with the Duke Energy Safety Manual and applicable federal, state, and local requirements.

  • Coordinate standard development activities while balancing multiple priorities and deadlines.

  • Assist other engineering and C&M teams as necessary.

  • Communicate standards updates and technical guidance to internal engineering teams, contractors, and stakeholders.

  • Provide engineering/technical expertise in the principles of Substation Physical design.

Technical Skills:

  • Familiarity with substation design software (e.g AutoCAD, Inventor, etc.)

  • Understanding and experience with NERC Compliance Standards including but not limited to, FAC-008

  • Demonstrate use of and ability to interpret design codes used for designs such as NEC, NESC and others as applicable.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of T/T and T/D substation design.

  • Demonstrated experience with construction project work, Maximo, CAST Pro, TIM and other work tools to create drawings, multilevel CUs and other standards for T/T and T/D substation designs.

Basic/ Required Qualifications

Engineer III

  • Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program. A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. in engineering degree.

  • Minimum of 4 years engineering experience

Senior Engineer

  • Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program or state registration as a Professional Engineer. A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. in engineering degree.

  • Minimum of 6 years of engineering experience or 5 years of engineering experience with state registration as a Professional Engineer.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with substation physical layout, grounding, conduit/cable trench, foundations, structures, equipment mounting, or bus design

  • Experience developing or maintaining engineering standards, design guides, or template drawings

  • Experience coordinating with design engineering, construction, maintenance, asset management, vendors, or other cross-functional stakeholders.

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • Skilled in engineering theories and principles

  • Skilled in the practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations, and preparing and presenting recommendations.

  • Good written and oral communication skills.

  • Skilled in the principles of project management.

  • Experience in the utility industry.

  • Department specific experience applicable to the hiring department.

Working Conditions

  • Office environment with some field and factory visits.

  • Flexible work schedule.

  • Hybrid – Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable commute (not greater than 50 miles one way) to the designated Duke Energy facility. Reliable, consistent transportation is required to ensure timely arrival at the applicable facility.
