Instrumentation & Controls Engineer 3

Zachry Engineering Corporation is seeking a skilled and motivated Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) Engineer 3 to join our growing Charlotte team. This role offers the opportunity to contribute to engineering design efforts supporting Power, Energy, and Industrial infrastructure projects for major utility and industrial clients. Working within a collaborative environment, you will develop control system solutions, support project execution, and grow your technical expertise while partnering with experienced engineering professionals.

Responsibilities

What You'll Do

As an I&C Engineer 3, you will apply engineering principles to design and implement safe, reliable, and efficient control systems while supporting project teams and clients.

You will:
  • Apply instrumentation, controls, and electrical engineering principles to support multidisciplinary project execution
  • Design, specify, and integrate instrumentation and control systems for industrial and process facilities
  • Develop and review key I&C deliverables, including:
    • Instrument and I/O Lists
    • Wiring and interconnection schematics
    • Instrumentation and control system specifications
    • Loop diagrams
    • Control panel layouts
  • Assist in the development and review of control narratives, cause-and-effect matrices, and system functional descriptions
  • Perform instrument sizing, selection, and specification for process measurement and control applications
  • Support PLC, DCS, SCADA, and plant control system design efforts
  • Coordinate with process, mechanical, electrical, civil, and piping disciplines to support integrated project execution
  • Participate in client meetings, design reviews, HAZOP studies, and technical workshops
  • Identify and help resolve technical issues while ensuring compliance with applicable codes, standards, and client requirements
  • Provide guidance and support to junior engineers and designers as appropriate
  • Support project execution activities, including planning, scheduling, budgeting, and quality reviews
  • Support startup activities, commissioning efforts, and field investigations as required


Qualifications

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical, Process, Controls Engineering, or related engineering discipline from an ABET-accredited university
  • 5+ years of Instrumentation & Controls engineering experience in Power Generation, Utilities, Industrial, Oil & Gas, Chemical, Process, or related industries
  • Working knowledge of instrumentation design, control systems, and industrial automation applications
  • Experience developing engineering deliverables and technical specifications for industrial projects
  • Familiarity with PLC, DCS, SCADA, and industrial communication systems
  • Ability to manage individual work assignments and contribute to multiple projects simultaneously
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with clients and project stakeholders
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

Preferred Qualifications
  • Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) certification
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or progress toward obtaining licensure
  • Experience with major control platforms such as Emerson Ovation/DeltaV, Honeywell Experion, ABB, Siemens, Rockwell Automation, or Schneider Electric systems
  • Experience supporting utility, power generation, renewable energy, or industrial infrastructure projects
  • Experience mentoring junior engineers or coordinating engineering tasks within a project team
  • Familiarity with ISA, IEEE, NFPA, and applicable industry standards and codes
