GCI's Engineer III, Engineering & Architecture will work cross-functionally as required to develop, deploy, and maintain the products and services offered by the company. Interact with internal groups and external customers to ensure our products and services are performing as designed. Work within capital and operations budgets to ensure projects remain on scope and within budget. Follow company policy and department guidelines to support and successfully complete development and lifecycle maintenance of network plans, policies, and procedures following engineering/architecture design principles. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES AT ALL LEVELS:
Focus Areas:
  1. Forecasting, Automation, & Optimization
    1. Accountable for forecasting demand on the GCI network (satellite, microwave, core, TERRA, HFC, Mobility).
      1. Provides forecasts bi-annually for input into the LRP (long range plan).
      2. Provides ad-hoc capacity checks as requested from other GCI departments.
    2. Coordinates with other departments to optimize costs by consolidating or "right sizing" leased capacity as necessary.
    3. Accountable for automating and optimizing processes, workflows, and tools.

Additional Job Requirements:

At a senior engineer level, will be expected to perform highly complex and diverse design, plans, analysis, and implementation under deadlines and operating constraints. Receives clear direction on assignment objectives, complex features, and possible solutions; must be able to make independent decisions and provide technical direction and resolution. Supervisory assistance provided on unusual problems. Reviews and provides final engineering design specifications and service requirements. Ability to coordinate, direct, assist, provide technical direction, and mentor junior engineers and supporting technicians.

  • Practical experience with configuration, routing, switches, within a Network Telecommunications environment.

Minimum Qualifications:

Required: *A combination of relevant work experience and/or education sufficient to perform the duties of the job may substitute to meet the total years required on a year-for-year basis
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, electrical engineering, mathematics, or related field. *
  • Minimum of six (6) years of experience in relevant field. *

Preferred:
  • Professional level Certifications: Cisco CCNA, MEF CECP, SCTE Dep, (SCTE DEP (DOCSIS Engineering Professional) Certified SOA Architect, CITA, EACOE.
  • Telecommunications experience.
  • Other telecom industry or job specific certifications.

DRIVING REQUIREMENTS:
  • This position requires driving a company-owned vehicle, company provided vehicle, or a personal vehicle on behalf of the company. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license, proof of insurance, a satisfactory driving record, and successfully complete Defensive Driving course.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS and WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • This position may require travel throughout the state of Alaska.
  • Work is primarily sedentary, requiring daily routine computer usage.
  • Ability to work shifts as assigned, work in standard office/home office setting, and operate standard office equipment.
  • Ability to accurately communicate information and ideas to others effectively.
  • Physical agility and effort sufficient to perform job duties safely and effectively.
  • Ability to make valid judgments and decisions.
  • Available to work additional time on weekends, holidays, before or after normal work hours when necessary.
  • Must work well in a team environment and be able to work with a diverse group of people and customers.
  • Virtual workers must comply with remote work policies and agreements.

Due to business needs employees may be contacted outside of the core business hours to respond to the immediate emergency.
