Highlights of the job

We are hiring a full time, permanent Engineer, Structural (Civil) position working out of Edmonton, AB. This position reports to the Manager, Apparatus Aerial & Underground Transmission.

The Engineer, Structural is accountable for all civil structural engineering services within high voltage transmission substations, as well as aerial and underground lines in EPCOR's Electricity Operations. In this role, you will oversee green and brown field projects, represent EPCOR when working with design consultants and ensure compliance with regulatory and industry standards.

As our best candidate, you are capable of working in multi-discipline engineering teams, as needed, providing guidance to other team members and building relationships with internal and external consultants and stakeholders. You are a creative problem solver who can manage a variety of issues while meeting commitments.

This position may be eligible for EPCOR's hybrid work program.

What you'd be responsible for

  • Developing and maintaining the civil structural engineering standards and templates, including the development, review and approval of design philosophies, standards, templates and drawings while also ensuring compliance to industry standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Contributing to the Transmission Engineering department plans and implementing appropriate deliverables within the context of the Transmission business plan, department goals and project objectives.
  • Authenticating design drawings and issuing design packages.
  • Leading the quality management of all civil structural related aspects of projects and maintenance work.
  • Reviewing external design packages, studies and geotechnical reports and making recommendations.
  • Participating in developing the work scope for consultants and construction contract RFPs relating to civil/structural matters.
  • Identifying the necessary budget requirements for the provision of professional development, standards and guidelines literature and computer programs necessary to carry out civil engineering functions.
  • Providing engineering and commissioning support to field construction related to the civil structural design discipline.
  • Creating commissioning and Inspection Test Plans (ITPs) for construction with hold points for all civil structural work.
  • Performing design work for civil structural engineering matters for both the substations and transmission lines.


What's required to be successful

  • Professional Engineer registered with APEGA and a Bachelor of Science in Civil/Structural Engineering.
  • 5 years of design experience within the Civil Structural Engineering field.
  • Experience working with substation and transmission line designs is considered an asset.
  • Minimum 1-2 years of experience performing active, onsite field support for construction projects.
  • Knowledge of industry civil/structural standards and understanding of Alberta building and City of Edmonton codes and standards.
  • Trained on structural analysis software. Experience with PLS CADD for line design would be an asset.
  • Proficiency in computer applications, including Microsoft Office, Ivara, P6, e-scheduler and other project tools.
  • Strong analytical, decision making and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to clearly and concisely communicate technical or complex issues.
