Job Description

As a Substation Field Engineer, youll take on dynamic assignments of basic to moderate complexity in engineering design, problem analysis, and planning. In this hands-on role, youll conduct field investigations and contribute to the development of critical reports, specifications, standards, and test memorandahelping ensure the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of our energy infrastructure.

This position does not provide employment pursuant to the terms of a STEM OPT Training Plan.

Responsibilities

Core Responsibilities
  • Provide expert technical support and guidance throughout the commissioning, construction, and maintenance phases of major substation electrical equipment, including high-voltage (HV) and medium-voltage (MV) circuit breakers, power transformers, MV switchgear, capacitor banks, gas-insulated substations (GIS), instrument transformers, DC systems, and specialized test equipment.
  • Deliver on-site technical support to substation operations during system and equipment issues, conducting thorough root cause analyses and investigations to identify and resolve equipment failures.
  • Independently lead initiatives by identifying areas for investigation and proactively driving projects and programs to successful outcomes.
  • Interface with equipment manufacturers, industry standards and R&D organizations.
  • Support the development and refinement of operating, maintenance, and testing procedures to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable substation performance.
  • Participate in preparation of scoping documents, concept reviews, design field walks.
  • Provide input for the development and update of equipment health indices and recommends planned equipment replacements.
  • Conduct and participate in field evaluation/analysis of field equipment or system maloperations, prepare failure analysis reports and other analyses as may be required.
  • Prepare test procedures for equipment commissioning or post repair restoration.
  • As part of the Engineering Duty Roster, you will provide 24-hour support, including reviewing and approving test results and responding to emergent issues, for a week approximately 4-6 times annually.


Qualifications

Required Education/Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering and a minimum of 3 years of engineering work experience in the development and application of technical principles in substation equipment rating, application, specification, engineering, operation, and maintenance.
Preferred Education/Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering and a minimum of 3 years of engineering work experience in the development and application of technical principles in substation equipment rating, application, specification, engineering, operation, and maintenance.
Relevant Work Experience
  • Computer proficiency to include Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), required.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with personnel on all levels, required.
  • Demonstrated understanding of fundamental engineering design concepts and principles, required.
  • Possess a working knowledge of applicable codes and industry standards associated with substation equipment, required.
  • Ability to write specifications and standards and coordinate engineering projects and assignments, preferred.
  • Candidates with a specialization in electrical engineering or power systems are strongly preferred.

Physical Demands
  • Ability to respond to system emergencies
  • Able to work in all weather conditions, i.e. excessive heat and/or cold
  • Ability to carry tools and materials when climbing ladders and scaffolds, and entering confined spaces
  • Work in, under, and on top of all types of company vehicles and/or equipment
  • Ability to climb ladders and stairs
  • Stand, walk, and climb ladders and stairs for the duration of the workday
  • Ability to travel to company locations to work on storm restoration and heat contingencies
  • Wear necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), i.e. fire-retardant clothing and safety harnesses
Additional Physical Demands
  • The selected candidate will be assigned a System Emergency Assignment (i.e., an emergency response role) and will be expected to work non-business hours during emergencies, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must be able to work in and around substations that are under construction and/or in service.
  • Must be available to work additional hours, as needed, for system emergencies or equipment outage schedules.
