Job Description

As part of our Ordnance Systems team, you will work alongside some of the industry's top talent at the forefront of energetics technology. We are seeking a Senior Control Systems Engineer to join a team responsible for the design, implementation, commissioning, and troubleshooting of comprehensive systems. This includes PLC/DCS (Distributed Control System) controls, Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs), Human Machine Interfaces (HMIs), and associated communication networks for process control and monitoring applications. This position focuses on capital improvement projects and chemical production support at the Radford Army Ammunition Plant in the New River Valley of western Virginia.

Essential Duties
  • Provide high-level plant support by responding to and resolving control system issues with urgency.
  • Collaborate within a multidisciplinary team to estimate, design, implement, and commission chemical modernization projects for the manufacturing facility.
  • Design and support multiple aspects of control systems (PLC, HMI, DCS, VFD, etc.), including hardware, network, and software configurations.
  • Ensure all work aligns with control systems standards and procedures; participate in testing and checking out system I/O, interlocks (safety and process), and automated control strategies.
  • Review and drive control system design improvements in collaboration with customers and operators.
  • Coordinate all activities with customers, including providing guidance and drafting commissioning plans and subcontractor scopes of work.
  • Ensure full compliance with safety regulations and quality standards, including the timely completion of all required safety training.
  • Identify and develop standards, procedures, guides, training plans, and process checklists.
  • Contribute to Process Hazard Analysis (PHA), Root Cause Analysis (RCA), and other assigned investigations.
  • Review team projects for quality and accuracy.
  • Specify and requisition the purchase of necessary hardware and software.
  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with supported customers.
  • Manage, prioritize, and support multiple concurrent projects.
  • Participate in a rotating on-call schedule to support production during off-hours.
  • This role requires regular presence in a manufacturing or fabrication environment. The incumbent must be able to access and safely navigate production areas which may include climbing, kneeling, stooping, and working in confined spaces. Must also be able to comply with all requirements including the use of required personal protective equipment (PPE) in accordance with company policy.


Required Skills and Education

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Controls System Engineering, Computer Science and 4+ years of applicable experience. May consider other engineering related experience or relevant associate's technical degree.
  • Able to read and interpret P&IDs and electrical drawings.
  • Able to read, interpret, and / or write documentation required to program a complete control system (e.g., Functional Specifications, Control Narratives, I/O Lists).
  • Experience working on (as part of a team) design, implementation, troubleshooting, and commissioning of PLC/HMI applications using products such as Siemens PCS7, TIA Portal, and/or Rockwell/Allen-Bradley for process or automation systems.


Preferred Skills and Education

  • Prior experience in chemical manufacturing, petrochemical, or hazardous material production facilities.
  • Experience providing plant support within a 24/7 manufacturing environment.
  • Experience leading a team through the design, implementation, troubleshooting, and commissioning of PLC/HMI applications (Siemens PCS7, TIA Portal, or Rockwell/Allen-Bradley).
  • Experience integrating vendor skids into complex manufacturing or chemical processes.
  • Experience with variable speed drives, positioners, actuators, valves, and instrumentation used in industrial plant production.
  • Knowledge of industrial network architectures, topologies, cybersecurity, servers, software validation, and simulation.
  • Proficiency with at least one control system platform, including Siemens PCS7, Simatic Batch, TIA Portal, WinCC, Allen Bradley ControlLogix/CompactLogix, or Wonderware.
  • Experience configuring and maintaining Historian databases, including Active Factory and Siemens Process Historian/Information Server.
  • Experience with communication protocols including Profibus, Profinet, Modbus TCP, and HART.
  • Experience with Variable Frequency Drives, specifically Siemens and Eaton.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) or Engineer In Training (EIT) certification. #LI-Onsite #LI-JR1
