Job Description

BAE Systems Space & Mission Systems (SMS) is seeking an EO/IR Test Engineer to support integration, verification, and validation of advanced Electro-Optical/Infrared (EO/IR) systems and payloads. This role focuses on planning and executing test activities across development, integration, environmental, and production environments to ensure system performance meets requirements and supports successful transition from development into production.

The EO/IR Test Engineer works closely with systems, software, hardware, optical, mechanical, and manufacturing teams to develop and execute comprehensive test programs, analyze performance data, troubleshoot anomalies, and verify compliance to mission and customer requirements in a complex multidisciplinary environment.

What You'll Do:

  • Support execution of system integration and test activities for EO/IR payloads and sensor systems.
  • Ensure alignment between requirements, mission needs, and verified system performance.
  • Develop and execute test plans, procedures, and test campaigns supporting system verification and validation.
  • Perform subsystem and system-level testing in laboratory, integration, environmental, and field test environments.
  • Conduct optical performance characterization including image quality, resolution, sensitivity, signal-to-noise ratio, alignment, calibration, and tracking performance assessments.
  • Collect, process, and analyze test data to evaluate EO/IR system performance.
  • Support integration activities across hardware, software, firmware, optics, and mechanical components.
  • Identify, troubleshoot, and document test anomalies and system issues.
  • Support verification of system requirements through test, inspection, demonstration, and analysis methods.
  • Assist in development of automated test tools, scripts, and data analysis methods.
  • Collaborate with Systems Engineering teams to ensure test activities maintain traceability to requirements and verification objectives.
  • Support development and maintenance of MBSE artifacts used to define system behavior, interfaces, requirements traceability, and verification planning.
  • Support verification planning activities within MBSE environments, ensuring linkage between requirements, test procedures, and verification results.
  • Document test results and contribute to technical reports, verification matrices, and technical review artifacts.
  • Support preparation and execution of formal test events, technical reviews, and customer demonstrations.
  • Maintain a regular and predictable work schedule.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships within the department, the Strategic Business Units, Strategic Capabilities Units and the Company. Interact appropriately with others in order to maintain a positive and productive work environment.
  • Perform other duties as necessary.

On-Site Work Environment: This position requires regular in-person engagement by working on-site five days each normally scheduled week in the primary work location. Travel and local commute between company campuses and other possible non-company locations may be required.

Working Conditions:
  • Work is performed in an office, laboratory, production floor, or cleanroom, outdoors or remote research environment.
  • May occasionally work in production work centers where use of protective equipment and gear is required.
  • May access other facilities in various weather conditions.

Required Skills and Education

  • BS degree or higher in Engineering or a related technical field is required plus 6 or more years related experience.
  • Each higher-level degree, i.e., Master's Degree or Ph.D., may substitute for two years of experience. Related technical experience may be considered in lieu of education. Degree must be from a university, college, or school which is accredited by an agency recognized by the US Secretary of Education, US Department of Education.
  • A current, active Secret security clearance is required.
  • 6 or more years of experience in test engineering, integration, verification, validation, or related technical roles.
  • Experience supporting integration and test activities on complex EO/IR, imaging, sensing, aerospace, or defense systems.
  • Experience developing and executing test procedures and test campaigns.
  • Familiarity with requirements verification and validation processes.
