Job DescriptionIdaho National Laboratory's Decision Sciences Department is hiring an early-career Economics Analyst to help evaluate emerging energy technologies, markets, and deployment decisions. Working with economists, engineers, and other researchers, this individual will translate data and technical information into clear, decision-relevant economic insights for DOE and other stakeholders.
This team member will collect and analyze data; build, document, and test economic, financial, and techno-economic models; and communicate results through reports, presentations, and visualizations. The successful candidate will bring strong quantitative reasoning, curiosity, attention to detail, and a willingness to learn across diverse energy and industrial applications.
Our team works a 9x80 schedule located out of our Idaho Falls facility with every other Friday off.
Responsibilities Include:- Conduct economic, financial, and techno-economic analyses under the guidance of experienced researchers to inform technology development, commercialization, and deployment decisions.
- Gather, clean, validate, and document data from government, industry, academic, and other credible sources; identify data limitations and test the reasonableness of key assumptions.
- Build, test, and maintain transparent and reproducible spreadsheet- and code-based models, including appropriate quality assurance and documentation.
- Apply analytical methods such as cost analysis, discounted cash flow analysis, cost-benefit analysis, market analysis, and scenario, sensitivity, and uncertainty analysis.
- Collaborate with engineers, scientists, and other subject-matter experts to translate technical performance, scale-up, and operational assumptions into economic inputs and results.
- Evaluate how labor and market conditions, energy policy and preferences, infrastructure, and supply-chains may affect the competitiveness and deployment of energy and industrial technologies.
- Communicate methods, assumptions, findings, and limitations through clear charts, tables, written narratives, and presentations tailored to technical and nontechnical audiences.
- Contribute to project deliverables, peer-reviewed publications, and proposals through research, analysis, writing, technical review, and incorporation of feedback.
- Manage assigned tasks, meet agreed-upon milestones, communicate risks early, and continuously develop expertise in energy economics, analytical methods, and research tools.
Minimum Requirements:- Level 1: Bachelor's degree in economics, applied economics, data science, or a closely related discipline.
- Level 2: Bachelor's degree in one of the above fields and 2 years of relevant experience, or a Master's degree.
- Demonstrated quantitative problem-solving ability; proficiency with spreadsheet analysis; clear written and verbal communication skills; ability to work effectively on multidisciplinary teams; and ability to acquire and/or maintain a security clearance.
- This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "L" clearance, which requires US Citizenship.
Desired Experience:- Coursework, research, internship, or professional experience in economic modeling, cost-benefit analysis, financial modeling, labor market economics, techno-economic analysis, econometrics, market analysis, public policy analysis, or supply-chain analysis; experience with energy or industrial technologies is preferred.
- Experience with one or more analytical tools beyond spreadsheets, such as Python, R, MATLAB, SQL, data-visualization software, or version-control systems, and experience documenting and presenting quantitative work.
Physical Requirements:While performing the duties of this classification, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, bend, use hands to handle materials, manipulate tools, keyboard and type, reach with hands and arms, and operate job-related equipment. Job Information:- The pay range for this position is: Level 1 ($66,504 - $136,356) / Level 2 ($79,344 - $162,732). At Idaho National Laboratory compensation decisions are determined using factors such as education, relevant experience, and other credentials.
- Multi-Level: This is a multi-level posting and you will be placed at the appropriate level dependent on depth and breadth of proven experience and skills.
- TDP: This is a testing designated position; you will be required to submit to a pre-employment drug screen and periodic drug testing throughout the term of your employment.
