We are seeking an Energy and Power Systems Engineer to join our North Geography as a part of the Energy Engineering and Power Systems (EEPS) Team. This role will be based in Calgary or Toronto.
You will be a part of an integrated and growing team of utility renewable focused practitioners that cross disciplines in a holistic service offering inclusive of electrical & power engineers, civil engineers, and energy and sustainability consultants.
The ideal candidate should have experience performing renewable energy detailed design and related studies, with a focus on solar photovoltaic systems, wind energy, battery storage, and substations. Additionally, the individual will perform various analytical studies related to power systems design such as grounding, short circuit, load flow, and cable ampacity.
The candidate will be expected to contribute to current work and collaborate with other disciplines to deliver quality deliverables and client outcomes.
The opportunity- Prepare and review the electrical design of Solar PV and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) facilities, including single line diagrams, site layout, medium voltage (MV) collection systems, communication schematics, and associated electrical studies.
- Conduct and review engineering calculations such as grounding/earthing studies, short-circuit analysis, cable ampacity sizing, load flow analysis, and AC/DC voltage drop calculations.
- Size and optimize DC cable routes for solar arrays, including string sizing, routing from modules to combiner boxes/disconnect switches, and cable tray/conduit planning.
- Support in the development of solar plant design packages, including DC/AC electrical single-line diagrams, cable schedules, equipment specifications, and construction-ready drawings.
- Develop detailed BESS plant design packages.
- Perform energy production estimates, system performance modelling, and techno-economic evaluations
- Support interconnection studies and protection coordination activities as needed.
- Contribute to studies of front-of-the-meter and behind-the-meter microgrid facilities, including planning, design, and interconnection.
- Demonstrate willingness to expand capabilities into substation design, protection, and power system studies associated with utility-scale solar and BESS interconnections.
- Provide engineering markups and technical direction to designers and drafters in the development of substation and data center MV interconnection layouts.
- Provide guidance to the design team regarding applicable electrical codes, utility standards, and industrial design practices during the development of electrical arrangement layouts.
- Strong knowledge of the Canadian Electrical Code, CSA standards and utility design requirements.
- Lead design coordination meetings and provide day to day technical direction to designers and drafters.
- Experience developing utility interconnection substations, collector substations, Mv distribution systems, or data center electrical infrastructure is considered an asset.
Is this role right for you?
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in electrical engineering
- At least 4 years of experience in the renewable power generation sector.
- Must possess strong technical verbal and technical writing skills and be able to read and interpret technical literature and engineering plans
- Working towards a P.Eng license
- Experience with utility (LDC) interconnection process (eg. COVER)
- Experience with grounding/earthing studies, short-circuit analysis, cable ampacity sizing, load flow analysis, and AC/DC voltage drop calculations

Toronto Hiring Range - Hiring Range - The good faith base salary hiring range for this job if performed in Toronto is $97,000 to $107,000 per year.
This range is commensurate with experience, educational background, and skill level. Benefits are not included in the base salary. Please note hiring ranges for candidates performing work outside of Toronto will differ.
