THE POSITION IDEAL CANDIDATE STATEMENT
The ideal candidate for the City of Sacramento Electrician position is a highly skilled, safety-conscious, and dependable electrical who possesses strong knowledge of electrical systems, equipment, troubleshooting, repair, installation, and preventative maintenance.
They will demonstrate the ability to diagnose complex electrical problems, interpret electrical plans and schematics, use appropriate testing equipment, and perform repairs and installations in accordance with applicable electrical codes, safety regulations, and City standards. The ideal candidate will be comfortable working on a variety of electrical systems, including building electrical distribution, lighting, controls, motors, generators, and related equipment.
In addition to technical expertise, the ideal candidate will demonstrate excellent judgment, problem solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently while also contributing effectively as a member of a team. Strong customer service and communication skills are essential, both written and verbal.
DEFINITION
This is skilled journey-level work in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical/electronic systems and equipment in various municipal buildings, parks, stations, plants, street lighting and fire alarm systems. The work involves the performance of skilled tasks in accordance with standard trade practices in the installation, alteration, maintenance, and repair of electrical/electronic systems, and equipment. Assignments are made in the form of written or oral instructions and may be accompanied by sketches and/or blue prints. Work is ordinarily performed independently and subject to inspection in process or upon completion.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Installs conduits, wire, pull boxes, switchboards, and switches required in making additions, extensions, or alterations in electrical, communication and data systems.
- Repairs and maintains building interior and exterior lighting, power, heating, fire alarm, and street lighting systems.
- Repairs and/or replaces defective parts in motors, generators, pumps, storage batteries, switchboards, controllers, contactors, switches, uninterruptible power supplies, and other fixtures and appliances.
- Tests, locates, and repairs trouble in electrical circuits and equipment including medium voltage distribution systems.
- Repairs and replaces damaged electroliers, fire alarm boxes, and police telephone boxes; replaces defective underground cables on street lighting system.
- Performs limited troubleshooting, repair, and modifications to PLC hardware and software.
- Reviews project documents prior to construction and inspects the work of electrical contractors to ensure conformance with plans and specifications.
- Other related duties may also be performed; not all duties listed are necessarily performed by each individual holding this classification.
QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of:- The standard practices, materials, tools, and equipment of the electrical trade.
- Occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
- Local and national electrical codes.
- The installation, operation and maintenance of electrical/electronic equipment, apparatus, and instruments.
Ability to:- Understand and follow oral and written instructions and to read and interpret blueprints, sketches, and diagrams.

Skill in:- Locating and adjusting defects in electrical systems and equipment.
- The use and care of tools and equipment of the electrical trade.
Experience and Education:
Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying.
A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be experience as a journey-level Electrician. Journey level is completion of a recognized apprenticeship and 8,000 hours in the field.

Driver License:Possession of a valid California Class C Driver License at the time of appointment. Loss of the Class C License is cause for discipline. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to physical disability will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
Residency Requirement:Employees in this classification must reside within thirty-five (35) air miles from the freeway interchange at W-X Streets, 29th-30th Streets within one year following appointment.
PROBATIONARY PERIOD:Employees must complete twelve (12) months of probation at a satisfactory performance level prior to gaining permanent status.

TEST EXEMPTION - If you have previously taken the Electrician exam within the past year of the final filing date of this posting, you may be considered exempt from taking the Electrician Exam.

5. Eligibility - Candidates who pass the performance test will be placed on an eligible list. The hiring department may contact those on the eligible list for an interview at any time during the life of the one-year list. Candidate's eligibility expires year from the date of notification of a passing score for the Electrician examination. Candidates can take the examination at any time to maintain eligibility.
- If you are currently on an active eligible list for the Electrician classification, it is unnecessary to retake the examination.
- The eligible list is effective one year from the date of passing the examination for the Electrician.
