Electrical, Instrumentation & Automation Engineer

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Electrical, Instrumentation & Automation Engineer to lead the reliability, maintenance, and continuous improvement of plant electrical, instrumentation, control, and automation systems. This position plays a critical role in ensuring the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of production equipment by providing technical leadership in electrical design, PLC and HMI programming, instrumentation, process control, troubleshooting, and asset reliability.

The ideal candidate will have extensive hands-on experience with Rockwell ControlLogix PLCs, Modicon PLCs, HMI systems, medium- and low-voltage electrical systems, instrumentation, and cement manufacturing processes. This individual will serve as a technical subject matter expert and work closely with operations, maintenance, engineering, and plant leadership to optimize equipment performance and drive operational excellence.

Key Responsibilities
• Ensure the reliability, availability, and performance of plant electrical, instrumentation, control, and automation systems.
• Provide technical support for medium-voltage and low-voltage electrical equipment, including transformers, switchgear, motor control centers (MCCs), motors, generators, grounding systems, lighting systems, and lightning protection systems.
• Design, program, configure, test, commission, and maintain PLC and HMI systems used throughout the manufacturing process.
• Develop, modify, and troubleshoot PLC logic and HMI applications to support production requirements and process improvements.
• Participate in the planning, budgeting, and cost control of maintenance activities related to electrical, instrumentation, and automation systems.
• Analyze equipment failures and process disruptions, determine root causes, and implement corrective and preventive actions to eliminate recurring issues.
• Lead Root Cause Analysis (RCA) investigations for significant equipment failures and operational incidents.
• Implement hardware and software upgrades, system modifications, and modernization initiatives for plant automation and control systems.
• Manage capital improvement and maintenance projects involving electrical, instrumentation, and automation equipment from concept through commissioning.
• Develop and maintain preventive, predictive, and autonomous maintenance programs designed to improve equipment reliability and reduce downtime.
• Coordinate maintenance and inspection activities with suppliers, contractors, electricians, technicians, and maintenance personnel.
• Supervise Electrical and Instrumentation Technicians and provide technical coaching and guidance.
• Monitor equipment performance and maintenance metrics to identify opportunities for optimization and continuous improvement.
• Collect and analyze equipment maintenance history, failure data, and operational trends to improve asset management strategies.
• Support production operations by providing timely troubleshooting and resolution of electrical, instrumentation, and automation issues.
• Collaborate with operations, engineering, maintenance, and plant leadership teams to drive reliability and performance improvements.
• Maintain compliance with all safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements.

Required Qualifications
• Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
• Minimum 5 years of experience designing, programming, and troubleshooting Rockwell ControlLogix PLC systems and HMI applications.
• Minimum 5 years of experience supporting medium-voltage and low-voltage electrical systems in an industrial manufacturing environment.
• Minimum 3 years of experience working in a cement manufacturing facility.
• Demonstrated experience managing automation, instrumentation, and electrical reliability initiatives.
• Strong understanding of industrial electrical codes, standards, and regulatory requirements.
• Proven experience with process control systems, instrumentation, and industrial automation technologies.
• Experience leading troubleshooting efforts and implementing long-term corrective actions for complex equipment failures.

Preferred Qualifications
• Experience with Modicon PLC programming and troubleshooting.
• Knowledge of predictive maintenance technologies and reliability-centered maintenance (RCM) methodologies.
• Experience with SAP Plant Maintenance (PM) and maintenance planning processes.
• Familiarity with AutoCAD, Visio, and electrical design documentation.
• Experience supporting continuous improvement, operational excellence, and lean manufacturing initiatives.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Advanced PLC programming and troubleshooting experience with Rockwell ControlLogix and Modicon platforms.
• Strong HMI programming, configuration, and support experience.
• Extensive knowledge of variable frequency drives (VFDs), AC and DC motor systems, transformers, generators, electrical protection systems, and industrial power distribution equipment.
• Strong understanding of electrical, instrumentation, and control systems used in heavy industrial manufacturing.
• Comprehensive knowledge of process control principles and machine automation systems.
• Working knowledge of cement manufacturing processes and production operations.
• Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, P&IDs, control narratives, and engineering drawings.
• Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
• Experience using SAP, AutoCAD, Visio, and other engineering and maintenance software tools.

Working Conditions
• Frequent exposure to industrial manufacturing environments, including extreme temperatures, dust, noise, vibration, and outdoor conditions.
• Required use of personal protective equipment (PPE) in accordance with plant safety policies.
• Must be comfortable working around heavy industrial equipment and active production processes.
• Position may require occasional after-hours support, weekend work, and holiday coverage to support critical plant operations.

Physical Requirements
• Ability to walk, stand, climb ladders and stairs, bend, reach, kneel, and work in industrial environments for extended periods.
• Ability to occasionally lift up to 100 pounds, frequently lift up to 50 pounds, and regularly move up to 20 pounds.
• Ability to safely operate and work around heavy equipment and machinery.
• Must possess sufficient visual, auditory, and communication abilities to safely perform essential job duties.
• Must successfully pass a DOT physical examination, including back evaluation, hearing test, and drug/alcohol screening.
