Responsibilities

Full Job Description
As an Electrical Project Engineer, you will deliver capital projects for critical infrastructure to design and construct electrical distribution systems for The City's industrial facilities primarily within its Water Utility. This work includes a wide range of engineering, technical, and project management assignments. Primary duties include:
  • Deliver electrically focused capital projects to sustain or improve electrical infrastructure, including the following related responsibilities:
    • Ensure all work is performed with a focus and prioritization on safety.
    • Accept overall responsibility for managing project budgets, schedules, scope, and quality.
    • Provide accountability and oversight of external consultants, contractors, equipment suppliers and other third parties.
    • Conduct comprehensive review and validation of engineering design, contract drawings and specifications.
    • Oversee construction, commissioning, and successful hand over of projects.
    • Report on progress, contract management and delivery of projects in compliance with existing City processes including The City's project management framework.
  • Engage and manage internal and external parties who may have an interest in the project.
  • Provide engineering oversite to ensure electrical infrastructure is safe, reliable, and sustainable.
  • Assess and identify requirements and opportunities to maintain, improve, and enhance electrical systems based on considerations including regulatory compliance, industry best practices, and innovative products and technologies.
  • Identify and pursue contributions that advance the organization and the profession, including mentoring junior and intermediate engineers, participating in technical committees or industry boards, and supporting internal initiatives such as standards development, process improvement, or knowledge sharing.


Qualifications

  • A degree in Electrical Engineering and at least 0-3 years (for level P2E), 4-7 years (for level P3E), or at least 8 years (for level P4E) of relevant professional engineering experience obtained after receiving your P.Eng. Designation and a current licensure as a Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) complete with practicing status OR licensure and practicing status by the first day of work.   • A valid Class 5 Driver's License (or provincial equivalent) and access to a personal vehicle for business use.
  • Experience in the design of industrial electrical distribution systems is preferred, including technical expertise in areas such as air or gas insulated switchgear, motor control centers, standby power, electrical network modelling, and/or power management systems.
  • Preference may be given to applicants with extensive project management experience with a focus on the delivery of capital projects including the assessment, design, and implementation of low and medium voltage electrical systems in industrial facilities.
  • Preference may be given to applicants who possess a successful track record in the delivery of electrical capital projects within critical infrastructure facilities which are designed to run continuously without interruption, including but not limited to water treatment facilities.
  • Demonstrated history of organizational and professional contributions beyond technical project delivery, such as engineering mentorship, committee or board participation, authorship of technical standards or guidance documents, or active involvement in professional associations (such as APEGA, IEEE, AWWA).
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a complex organization, leading a multi-disciplinary team to resolve problems and successfully deliver projects.
  • This position requires strong technical and analytical skills, strategic and critical thinking, risk assessment, problem solving and independent decision making, attention to detail and accuracy, and strong communication skills.

  • Level P4E $138,475 - 173,094 per annum (typically 8+ years' experience)
  • Hours of work: Standard 35 hour work week
  • Days of work: This position works a 5-day work week earning 1 day off in a 3 week cycle.
