Work Description:The Electrical Engineer within the Motion Division is responsible for the design, development, integration, and support of custom automated equipment and advanced motion systems. This role supports projects from concept through commissioning and plays a key role in delivering high-performance automation solutions for industrial, energy, composites, and advanced manufacturing applications.
The position works closely with Mechanical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Project Management, Manufacturing, and Field Service to ensure systems are designed for functionality, manufacturability, reliability, and serviceability. This role will support both standard product platforms and highly engineered custom systems, including confidential customer programs.
Key Responsibilities: Electrical System Design - Design electrical systems for automated machinery, motion platforms, and engineered equipment
- Develop electrical schematics, panel layouts, wiring diagrams, and bills of material
- Specify electrical components including: PLC hardware, VFDs and servo drives, safety devices and relays, power distribution systems, sensors and instrumentation, and network and communication hardware
- Support development of machine power distribution and control architectures
- Ensure designs comply with applicable electrical codes and standards including UL, NEC, NFPA, and customer specifications
Automation & Controls Integration - Work closely with Controls Engineers to support PLC, HMI, servo, and motion integration
- Assist in troubleshooting automation and electrical integration challenges during assembly and commissioning
- Support development and optimization of machine safety systems
- Coordinate electrical design requirements for robotic and motion control systems
- Assist with machine debug, startup, and validation activities
Project Execution - Participate in project kickoff meetings and design reviews
- Support project timelines through timely release of drawings and documentation
- Coordinate with Procurement and Manufacturing on component selection, lead times, and substitutions
- Support FAT (Factory Acceptance Testing), SAT (Site Acceptance Testing), and customer commissioning activities
- Travel as required for equipment installation, startup, troubleshooting, and customer support
Manufacturing & Assembly Support - Provide technical support to assembly technicians and electricians during machine builds
- Assist in resolving wiring, integration, and field issues
- Review and improve electrical assembly processes for efficiency and standardization
- Support continuous improvement initiatives related to quality, cost, and manufacturability
Documentation & Continuous Improvement - Maintain accurate engineering documentation and revision control
- Support creation of electrical standards and design best practices
- Assist in standardizing components and reducing electrical system complexity across platforms
- Participate in root cause analysis and corrective action efforts for field or production issues
Requirements
Required - 3+ years of experience in industrial automation, custom machinery, or engineered equipment preferred
- Experience with motion control systems, industrial automation, or manufacturing equipment strongly preferred
- Experience supporting equipment commissioning and troubleshooting preferred
Preferred - Experience with custom automation systems or engineered-to-order equipment
- Experience supporting large-scale industrial projects
- Knowledge of UL508A and NFPA 79 standards
- Familiarity with robotic systems and multi-axis motion equipment
- Experience working in fast-paced project-driven manufacturing environments
Physical Demands: - Ability to work in manufacturing and industrial environments
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, and lift up to 40 pounds as needed
- Ability to occasionally travel to customer sites and support equipment installations
- Ability to safely work around industrial machinery and electrical systems
