Job Summary

Department-Specific Responsibilities
  • Participates in departmental project teams and other duties as assigned by leadership.
  • Reviews design documents for compliance with University Standards.
  • Develops project scope and budgets in a timely manner.
  • Manages projects with outside consultants and in-house design from initial conception to completion for all university campuses and other properties.
  • Communicates with University staff and faculty, outside consultants, vendors, contractors, facility maintenance teams and other members of the Capital Planning and Facilities team.
General Responsibilities
  • Prepares design documents (plans and specifications) for electrical systems.
  • Researches and interprets current state and federal codes and design standards as well as university standards.
  • Makes decisions based on the proper application of these standards using knowledge and expertise to all design concepts and renovations.
  • Manages assigned projects and sees through to completion.
  • Prepares project cost estimates.
  • Provides technical guidance to colleagues and staff across campuses.
  • Provides assistance in design/procurement/maintenance of IU communication systems as requested.
  • Directs, coordinates, and administers the activities of the Electrical Engineering division.
  • Provides guidance to staff on priority-setting and strategy development.
  • Monitors performance for accuracy and completeness.
  • Reviews design work performed by in-house staff.
  • Ensures staff are properly trained to monitor compliance with state and federal regulations; university policy and guidelines; safety and OSHA compliance, departmental objectives, goals, processes, and procedures.
  • Participates in on-site inspections and project start-ups.
  • Examines buildings for code compliance.
  • Consults on high-voltage systems.
  • Assists the utility department to resolve high-voltage issues.
  • Responds to power outages if requested.
  • Helps troubleshoot problems.
  • Assists in long-range planning and budgeting.
  • Periodically updates the electrical design standards.
Qualifications

EDUCATION

Required
  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering
WORK EXPERIENCE

Required
  • 5 years electrical engineering experience in an institutional or consulting engineering setting including: design, cost preparation, project management, troubleshooting high and low voltage systems
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES

Required
  • Valid driver's license and ability to be insured by Indiana University upon date of hire
Preferred
  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) License upon date of hire
SKILLS

Required
  • Knowledge and application of all related codes including: national fire codes, ADA requirements, Indiana building and electrical codes, NEC standards
  • Knowledge and application of all IU standards governing architectural, electrical and CAD standards
  • Demonstrated leadership skills
  • Ability to operate a computer, knowledge of Microsoft Office, CADD, Excel, lighting design software, generator-sizing software; volt meter; load recorder; etc., and building codes application
Working Conditions / Demands

This role regularly requires the ability to effectively communicate. This role frequently requires the ability to handle equipment. This role frequently requires the ability to remain stationary and ascend/descend ladders/stairs. This role requires the ability to move objects weighing up to 25 pounds. The role requires the ability to detect items in close proximity as well as far away; discern between colors; detect objects in peripheral space of self; discern items in detail; and to have good depth perception. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

Advertised Salary

$80,000 - $85,000 annually
