Job Description:

Brooks Instrument (www.brooksinstrument.com), an industry leader in flow and pressure instrumentation for critical applications, is seeking candidates for an Electrical Engineer position that will be based at the company headquarters in Hatfield, Pennsylvania (suburban Philadelphia). The company has manufacturing locations in Pennsylvania, Hungary, Malaysia, and Korea, and also maintains sales and service offices throughout the world. Our high-tech products are used in laboratory and process applications in end markets such as: oil & gas, petrochemical, medical devices, waste water, life sciences, and analytical instruments.

Basic Function

The Electrical Engineering position is part of the sustaining engineering team responsible for the design, support, and maintenance of electronic hardware and firmware for all released Brooks Instrument products. This role is a cross-functional position where both circuit design and embedded software development skills are required. This individual must be self-directed, highly motivated, and organized with strong analytical thinking and problem solving skills. They must also possess the ability to work on multiple projects and functions simultaneously in a team environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Design and maintain embedded hardware and firmware systems for flow and pressure control devices.
  • Create and maintain design documentation packages. Perform analog circuit design and simulation including power supply circuitry (switching and linear), voltage and current I/O circuitry, as well as circuits with discrete semiconductors.
  • Design and simulation of digital circuits using microprocessors and associated peripheral devices in embedded systems.
  • Use CAD tools for schematic capture and simulation to achieve circuit design goals.
  • Support printed circuit board (PCB) layouts, working within 2D and 3D spatial constraints.
  • Perform design work, preliminary testing, and coordination for agency approvals (CE, UL, RoHS).
  • Ability to diagnose problems and provide solutions within project constraints.
  • Possess abilities to take on multiple concurrent assignments under minimal supervision.
  • Excellent verbal and written English communication skills.
  • Strong teamwork skills.
  • Ability to follow all safety procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Knowledge , Skills and Abilities
  • Extensive knowledge of embedded electronics, including analog & digital circuit design
  • Working knowledge of circuit design and development tools (Altium Designer, OrCAD, SPICE) required.
  • Proficiency with use of electronic lab equipment (e.g. power supplies, multi-meters, oscilloscopes, function generators, network analyzers) required.
  • Familiarity with the Keil ARM IDE, Subversion, Bugzilla and STM32F processors required.
  • Skills in Unit Test testing and Code Coverage analysis methodology required.
  • Familiarity with industry standard communication protocols (EtherCAT, RS485, Profibus, Modbus, DeviceNet, Foundation Fieldbus) preferred
  • Programming ability using the C and/or C++ language required. Other programming languages a plus.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Project).


Education and Experience
  • B.S. Electrical Engineering is required and an M.S. degree is preferred
  • >5+ years of experience with embedded hardware development is preferred.
  • >5+ years of experience developing complex embedded software systems is preferred
  • Experience with mass flow control systems and/or other control systems highly desirable.
  • Experience with System Engineering and modeling is a plus (MatLab/Simulink/Embedded Coder).
