Responsibilities

  • Design and develop electrical tasks under engineer oversight on assigned projects.
  • Conduct field investigations and analyze existing conditions to craft comprehensive engineering solutions.
  • Perform power system studies such as load flow, short-circuit, protective coordination, and arc-flash analyses.
  • Prepare calculations, drawings, detailed plans, and technical specifications in line with client standards.
  • Collaborate with project managers and design teams to ensure coordinated, code-compliant design delivery.
  • Mentor junior staff, delegate tasks to production support, and share technical expertise.
  • Review drawings and research electrical and safety code issues while communicating with manufacturers and contractors.

Your Opportunity

The Electrical Designer Technician will work with direct supervision and general direction on tasks and smaller projects as a team member of a larger engineering team under the guidance of a Senior Engineer/Designer. You will assist in evaluating, selecting, specifying, and engineering certain electrical power and lighting systems or products for a project verifying compliance with applicable codes and internal engineering standards / practices. You will perform a variety of tasks which may include AutoCAD and/or Revit design, calculations, and field work. The smaller projects that an Electrical Designer may be assigned to will have routine and complex features. You will draw on strong building engineering knowledge to assist in the preparation of electrical plans, drawings, details and specifications in accordance with client standards and expectations.

Your Key Responsibilities
  • Serves as the electrical task designer with engineer oversight on assigned projects.
  • Performs field investigations and analyzes existing conditions to develop comprehensive engineering solutions.
  • May perform power system studies including load flow analysis, short-circuit analysis, protective coordination, and arc-flash studies.
  • An ability to learn and apply electrical engineering skills and knowledge to research and develop solutions to complex engineering challenges.
  • Prepare required calculations to meet project requirements
  • Supports project requirements including basis-of design narratives, opinions-of-probable-costs estimates, drawing documentation, systems design and technical specifications.
  • Collaborate with project managers and supporting design staff as part of a coordinated design team.
  • Actively participates in the development of design and junior engineering staff through work on projects as well as serving as a trainer, mentor and resource for junior design staff.
  • Effectively delegates work to production support staff.
  • Reviews drawings and research electrical and safety code issues to comply with national, city, state, and county regulations.
  • Has the ability to interact and effectively communicate with clients and project stakeholders.
  • Communicate with manufacturers and contractors to address challenges and develop practical designs.
  • Provides input on creation and editing of technical specifications.
  • Provides contract documents that meet the required codes and quality assurance standards.
  • Resolves design conflicts and questions and provides recommendations to address issues and add value.
  • Understands and works within project budgets and schedules to help project manager meet project financial and schedule goals.
  • Learning/Maintaining and Expanding Technical Skills
  • Maintains and shares current knowledge of technologies, trends and the markets in which we work as they apply to the applicable project types and continually strengthens skills.
  • Proactively pursues additional knowledge in related disciplines by attending available in-house and external training.

Your Capabilities and Credentials
  • Buildings electrical design knowledge, including but not limited to electrical, lighting, and fire alarm systems, device layouts, circuiting, panel schedules and load calcs, riser diagrams, and schedules.
  • Ability to prepare and review detailed drawings.
  • Ability to integrate design elements with architectural, civil, structural, ICT, mechanical and other disciplines to deliver a coordinated design.
  • Strong knowledge applicable codes and standards.
  • Knowledge of or the ability to learn specialty engineering applications such as SKM Power Tools.
  • Ability to apply logic, reasoning, and organizational skills to structure concepts and ideas into deliverables.
  • Ability to demonstrate a credible and trustworthy presence through professionalism, demeanor, and technical knowledge.
  • Familiarity with and ability to apply sustainable design principles within projects.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills to effectively support technical project consultation with key clients and project stakeholders.
  • Familiarity with CAD and Building Information Modeling (BIM) software; in particular, AutoCAD and Revit.
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • Possess a valid driver's license with a good driving record.

Preferred:
  • Professional experience in buildings electrical design for additional market segments in which we operate (healthcare, education, military and commercial).
  • Familiarity with various construction delivery processes such as Design-Build.
  • Knowledge of specialty electrical or lighting calculation applications.
  • Additional professional certifications, registrations, and credentials relevant to Stantec's practice areas and/or markets.

Education and Experience
  • Associate's degree or technical school diploma/certificate in a related program
  • Minimum of five years of related work experience; or an equivalent combination of Education and related experience.
  • EIT preferred

Pay Range:
  • Locations in CO, HI, IL, MD & Various CA, NJ Areas - Min Salary $ 70,000.00 - Max Salary $ 101,400.00

Pay Transparency: In compliance with pay transparency laws, pay ranges are provided for positions in locations where required. Please note, the final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible.

Benefits Summary: Regular full-time and part-time employees (working at least 20 hours per week) have access to medical, dental, and vision plans, a wellness program, health saving accounts, flexible spending accounts, 401(k) plan, employee stock purchase program, life and accidental death & dismemberment (AD&D) insurance, short-term/long-term disability plans, emergency travel benefits, tuition reimbursement, professional membership fee coverage and paid family leave.
