Position Summary: The Electrical Controls Engineer leads the design, integration, and commissioning of automated production systems across multiple sites, including robotics and advanced controls, while managing integrators and electrical contractors and establishing standardized practices; this role owns projects from concept through startup and drives enterprise-wide automation.
Duties/Responsibilities:- Own controls engineering and full project lifecycle for capital projects (requirements, design, programming, commissioning, startup, scope, schedule, budget, and vendor selection)
- Act as primary technical lead for OEMs, systems integrators, and electrical contractors, including proposal review, submittal evaluation, and on-site scope, quality, and schedule management
- Develop, standardize, and enforce controls specifications across facilities while architecting scalable control systems for multi-site manufacturing equipment
- Program, troubleshoot, and maintain PLCs (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Beckhoff, Mitsubishi) and HMIs; continuously improve control systems including logic, motor controls, and robotics
- Build and assemble electrical panels to NEC and UL 508A standards; design panels and schematics in AutoCAD Electrical and maintain full documentation (drawings, BOMs, as-builts) in compliance with NFPA 79, UL 508A, and ISO 13849-1
- Integrate and program industrial robots (FANUC, KUKA, ABB, etc.) and lead automation cell design with cross-functional engineering teams
- Troubleshoot complex production issues and drive continuous improvement through IIoT, data acquisition, analytics, and process optimization
- Mentor engineers and technicians, train maintenance teams, communicate across all organizational levels, and contribute to building a high-performing engineering organization
Qualifications: - Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or related field with 6-10 years of industrial controls and automation experience, including multi-site capital projects preferred
- Expert-level PLC programming (Allen-Bradley / Studio 5000 required; Siemens, Beckhoff, Mitsubishi preferred) with HMI/SCADA development experience
- Proven hands-on experience with industrial robot integration (FANUC, KUKA, ABB, or equivalent) and electrical panel build/wiring to NEC and UL 508A standards
- Proficiency in AutoCAD Electrical, with working knowledge of NFPA 79, UL 508A, ISO 13849-1, and industrial networks (EtherNet/IP, Profinet, Modbus, OPC-UA)
- Experience managing electrical contractors and independently owning full capital project scope from concept through completion
- Exposure to IIoT, data acquisition, connected manufacturing, and lean automation design principles preferred
- Ability to train maintenance teams, transfer technical knowledge, and communicate effectively across all levels, from plant floor to executive leadership
Physical Requirements:- Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
- Work may require stooping, bending, crouching, crawling, pushing, and / or pulling
- Must be able to communicate with others via phone, email, and in person. Must be able to exchange accurate information with others.
- Work environment is not temperature controlled and may result in exposure to extreme temperatures.
- Work primarily involves sitting / standing, up to 4 hours at a time.
