The New York City (NYC) Department of Buildings is responsible for ensuring the safe and lawful use of buildings and properties by enforcing the NYC Construction Codes, Electrical Code, Energy Conservation Code and Zoning Resolution. We facilitate compliant development with integrity, efficiency and professionalism. Reporting to Executive staff in the Division of Technical Affairs and Code Development, the Electrical and Fire Protection Engineer will work on the NYC Electrical Code, NYC Existing Building Code and NYC Construction Code related issues and on various technical subject matters. The individual, with minimum supervision, is responsible for:

- Researching complex technical issues and responding to inquiries submitted by engineers and architects regarding fire alarm systems, NYC Electrical Code, NYC Building Code and other standards, often under tight deadlines.
- Researching and reviewing proposed changes to NYC Electrical Code, NYC Building Code, reference standards, and Department rules.
- Assisting with drafting proposed revisions to NYC Electrical Code and NYC Building Code and participating in the code revision process for review.
- Review and generate detail responses for electrical special permissions, Construction Code Determinations (CCD1), associated with NYC Electrical Code and NYC Building Code.
- Attending meetings with industry stakeholders, city agencies and/or elected officials and their staff regarding NYC Electrical Code and NYC Building Code development.
- Meeting with members of the industry to provide technical assistance of a complex nature.
- Answering questions from the public regarding referenced design standards, fire alarm system, NYC Electrical Code, NYC Building Code and other related laws and rules.
- Developing and implementing technical training programs for inspectors, plan examiners and other technical staffs.
- Preparing presentation materials such as PowerPoint slides for agency staff, industry professionals, political officials, and the general public.
- Performing presentation to agency staff, inspectors, plan examiners and the general public.
- Participate in the Fire Alarm Steering Committee to review and answer questions from the general public, regarding referenced design standards, fire alarm system, NYC Construction Codes, NYC Fire Code and other related laws and rules.

CIVIL SERVICE STATUS:
Only those who are permanent in the Electrical Engineer civil service title, applicants who are reachable on the Electrical Engineer open competitive list, and applicants as indicated below will be considered.

Candidates who are permanent in comparable civil service titles may be considered for title change under rule 6.1.9 of the Personnel Rules and Regulations of the City of New York.

Qualifications

(1) Four (4) years of full-time, satisfactory experience in electrical engineering work; and
(2) A valid New York State Professional Engineer's License. Current New York State registration as a Professional Engineer must be maintained for the duration of your employment.
A masters degree in electrical engineering from an accredited college or university, accredited by regional, national, professional or specialized agencies recognized as accrediting bodies by the U.S. Secretary of Education and by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) may be substituted for one year of the electrical engineering experience required in "1" above.
