TITLE: ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS

QUALIFICATIONS:

  2. Bachelor's Degree with major or minor in English

REPORTS TO: Principal and Department Head

JOB GOAL:

To develop literacy skills (skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing) that are fundamental to good communication and literate citizenship; to develop appreciation and investigation of good literature; to develop strong writing skills; to provide students with authentic and alternative assessments; to develop criteria for critical judgment of written and oral communications; to direct research and inquiry as a vehicle for student driven learning; to utilize differentiated instruction to ensure all students receive an equitable education.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Teaches content and skills in English language, literature, composition, reading, and journalism students, utilizing a standards based course of study developed by the English Department and adopted by the School Committee
  2. Adapts the curriculum to provide individual, small group, or remedial instruction to meet the needs of the individual student.
  3. Develops standards for critical analysis through group discussion based on a variety of classical and contemporary literature.
  4. Encourages students to think independently and to express original ideas.
  5. Evaluates each student's progress in English skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing).
  6. Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive classroom environment.
  7. Identifies student needs, and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
  8. Communicates with parents and school counselors on student progress.
  9. Participates in curriculum and other development programs.
  10. Maintains professional growth through in-service educational activities provided by the school department and/or in self-selected professional activities.
  11. All other responsibilities that are listed in the collective bargaining agreement between the Fall River Educators' Association and the Fall River School Committee.

SALARY AND TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: In accordance with the Fall River Educators' Association contract. Employment is contingent upon job performance, program needs, and funding. Salary ranges from $59,491-$105,164 from Step 2 to Step 12, Bachelor's Degree-CAGS/Doctorate Degree.
