Job Title: EHS Manager

Department: Compliance & Process Efficiency

Location: Remote

Direct Supervisor: VP of C & PE

Indirect Supervisor: COO

JOB SUMMARY

The EHS Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing environmental, health, and safety programs for industrial wastewater treatment operations. This role ensures compliance with all applicable regulations, promotes a strong safety culture, and minimizes environmental risks associated with treatment processes, chemical handling, and waste disposal. The EHS Manager must have experience in water, wastewater, food and beverage manufacturing, chemical process design, or similar fields, and familiarity with the basics of safety in regards to industrial and municipal wastewater treatment equipment.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Regulatory Compliance
• Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations (e.g., EPA, OSHA).
• Manage permits related to wastewater discharge, air emissions, and hazardous waste.
• Maintain compliance with standards such as ISO 14001 and ISO 45001.
• Prepare and submit environmental reports (e.g., discharge monitoring reports, TRI reporting).

Environmental Management
• Oversee wastewater treatment processes to ensure environmental compliance.
• Monitor effluent quality, sludge handling, and chemical usage.
• Manage spill prevention, control, and countermeasure (SPCC) plans.

Health & Safety Programs
• Develop and enforce safety policies and procedures.
• Conduct hazard assessments and risk analyses for plant operations.
• Oversee programs such as:

o Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), Confined space entry, Hazard communication (HAZCOM), (PPE)
• Ensure safe handling and storage of chemicals (e.g., acids, caustics, coagulants).

Training & Culture
• Conduct EHS training for employees and contractors.
• Promote a proactive safety culture and continuous improvement mindset.
• Lead safety meetings, toolbox talks, and awareness campaigns.

Incident Management
• Investigate accidents, near-misses, and environmental incidents.
• Identify root causes and implement corrective/preventive actions.
• Maintain incident logs and reporting systems.

Audits & Inspections
• Conduct internal audits and inspections of facilities and processes.
• Coordinate external regulatory inspections and audits.
• Track corrective actions to closure.

Emergency Preparedness
• Develop and maintain emergency response plans.
• Coordinate drills for spills, chemical releases, fires, and confined space rescue.

Documentation & Reporting
• Maintain EHS records, permits, and compliance documentation.
• Track KPIs such as TRIR, lost-time incidents, and environmental exceedances and report performance metrics to leadership.

Worker's Compensation
• Root cause investigations
• OSHA reporting in regards to injuries such as the 300 Log.
• Managing injury from intake to release to work process.

Preventative Maintenance
• Define scope by process area, map critical assets, set time/runtime/condition-based frequencies, configure CMMS with assets, BOMs, recurring work orders.
• Routine inspection/lubrication of pumps, motors, blowers, mixers, conveyors, clarifiers; check seals, couplings, alignment, bearings, belts, gearboxes, and wear parts.
• Inspect confined-space gear, LOTO procedures, spill/containment, emergency response equipment, and ensure permit-driven sampling/calibration records.
• Maintain critical spare parts, coordinate outages with operations, manage vendor/service contracts and warranties.
• Track PM compliance, MTBF/MTTR, analyze failures (RCA), adopt condition monitoring (vibration, oil, thermal), and adjust PMs accordingly.
• Train staff on PMs, safety, and recordkeeping; maintain equipment history, calibration logs, and audit-ready documentation.

Any other projects or tasks as assigned by management.

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS (Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Experience)

The following are the minimum job requirements for this position.

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Engineering, Occupational Safety, or related field.
  • 5-10 years of EHS experience in industrial or wastewater treatment environments.
  • Experience managing Preventative Maintenance Programs.
  • Experience in the wastewater or food and beverage manufacturing industries of equipment systems that use aerobic and/or anaerobic digestion technology to treat wastewater, and the subsystems that support them
  • Regulatory knowledge and compliance management
  • Risk assessment and hazard analysis
  • Strong leadership and communication skills
  • Incident investigation and root cause analysis
  • Data analysis and reporting
