GENERAL SUMMARY
The ECMO Specialist - Lead plans, provides, and monitors individualized patient care as a member of the Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) team. The position functions as a clinical expert and resource for ECMO Specialists while providing operational support for the ECMO program. The role also provides developmentally appropriate care to neonatal, pediatric, and adult patients supported with extracorporeal life support, and maintains clinical competency as an ECMO Specialist. Reports to departmental leadership.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Serves as a clinical resource and mentor for ECMO Specialists regarding patient care, circuit management, troubleshooting, teamwork, and professionalism.
Maintains competency and actively functions as an ECMO Specialist to support patient care and staffing requirements.
Assists with scheduling, onboarding, orientation, training, and competency validation of ECMO Specialists
Assists with the development, implementation, and maintenance of ECMO policies, procedures, and clinical guidelines.
Collects appropriate data of ECMO outcomes for Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO) membership.
Performs all other duties as assigned.
LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS
Required Licenses and/or Certifications
Must obtain and maintain Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) specialty certifications as applicable.
American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) required within 45 days of hire.
Must meet one of the following requirements:
Certified Clinical Perfusionist (CCP) by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion (ABCP).
Current Virginia state license as a Registered Nurse (RN) or Registered Nurse holding a valid Compact State license required.
Current Virginia state license as a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) with active National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) credential.
Preferred Licenses and/or Certifications
American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN) certification as a CCRN, CCRN (Pediatric), or CCRN (Neonatal) preferred.
National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) active credential as a Neonatal/Pediatric Specialist (RRT-NPS) preferred.
Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO) Adult Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) Practitioner Certification (E-AEC) or ELSO Neonatal and Pediatric ECMO Practitioner Certification (E-NPEC) preferred.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

3+ years of direct Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) experience.
Proof of prior completion of an Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO) based Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) training program or completion of Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters in-house training program. In-house training must be completed within 90 days of hire.
Ability to demonstrate a high level of initiative, self-direction, and accountability.
Strong communication skills. Ability to effectively communicate with family members, physicians, APPs, nurses, respiratory therapists, and other clinicians.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Clinical patient care environment with minimal exposure to hazards such as excess noise, dust, or extremes in temperature. Frequent exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, medicinal preparations, body fluids and other conditions common to the healthcare environment. Moderate adverse working conditions due to the need to perform certain patient care activities.
