Position Summary

Reporting to the Manager, Engineering, the Design Engineer Specialist provides advanced technical expertise and leadership in the planning, design, review, and implementation of complex civil engineering projects supporting electrical transmission and distribution infrastructure.

As a recognized subject matter expert, you will lead and influence civil engineering design activities related to substations, stations, facilities, and associated infrastructure. You will provide technical guidance, engineering oversight, and specialized support throughout the project lifecycle, ensuring designs are safe, reliable, sustainable, and compliant with applicable engineering standards, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices.

This role offers the opportunity to work on complex projects while mentoring engineering staff, supporting continuous improvement initiatives, and contributing to the development of engineering standards and practices.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Leadership
  • Serve as a technical authority on complex civil engineering matters related to station and infrastructure projects.
  • Provide expert guidance and recommendations on engineering challenges, risks, and design solutions.
  • Review, evaluate, and approve engineering designs, technical reports, calculations, and specifications.
  • Conduct peer reviews and ensure engineering deliverables meet quality, safety, and regulatory requirements.
  • Support the development and continuous improvement of engineering standards, procedures, and best practices.


Project Design and Delivery
  • Lead and support the civil design of station and facility projects, including:

o Site grading and drainage systems

o Stormwater management

o Access roads and parking areas

o Site servicing and utility coordination

o Retaining structures and earthworks

o Foundation and site development considerations
  • Prepare or review engineering calculations, reports, specifications, drawings, and construction documentation.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to integrate civil engineering requirements into project designs.
  • Support project planning, budgeting, scheduling, and risk management activities.


Construction and Field Support
  • Provide engineering support during construction, commissioning, and project execution.
  • Investigate field conditions and technical issues and recommend practical engineering solutions.
  • Conduct site assessments and inspections to verify compliance with design intent, standards, and specifications.
  • Review and evaluate design changes, contractor proposals, and field modifications.


Stakeholder Collaboration
  • Coordinate with internal stakeholders, external consultants, contractors, municipalities, and regulatory agencies.
  • Support permitting, approvals, and regulatory compliance activities.
  • Represent the organization on technical committees, working groups, and industry forums as required.


Mentorship and Development
  • Mentor and support junior engineers and engineering staff.
  • Share technical knowledge and lessons learned to strengthen organizational capability.
  • Promote a culture of technical excellence, innovation, and continuous improvement.


What You Bring

Education
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited university.
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation in good standing with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO), or eligibility to obtain registration.


Experience
  • Significant experience in civil engineering design and project delivery for complex infrastructure, industrial, utility, energy, transportation, or municipal projects.
  • Experience with site development, grading, drainage, stormwater management, and utility coordination.
  • Experience reviewing engineering designs, technical reports, drawings, and specifications.
  • Demonstrated experience providing technical leadership and mentorship within multidisciplinary project environments.


Technical Knowledge
  • Strong knowledge of civil engineering principles, standards, and design practices.
  • Knowledge of site development, earthworks, drainage systems, stormwater management, and municipal servicing.
  • Understanding of applicable engineering codes, environmental regulations, and permitting requirements.
  • Familiarity with construction methods, contract administration, and field engineering practices.

The base salary for this role considers a variety of factors, including candidates' knowledge, skills, experience, education, and any applicable collective agreement requirements for union-represented positions.
