Job DescriptionSavannah River National Laboratory (SRNL), under the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Environmental Management (DOE-EM), seeks an innovative and strategic Division Director to lead the Advanced Technology and Analysis Division within the Global Security Directorate (GSD). The GSD plays a vital role in supporting National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) Defense Programs, the Department of Defense/Department of War, Department of Homeland Security, and other DOE and government agencies.
The Division Director collaborates closely with the Associate Laboratory Director to guide science and technology programs, set a clear vision, and implement strategic plans. The Division Director works with their leadership team, other Mission-Enablement Directors, and Laboratory's staff to develop and execute priorities. Together with the other Division Directors, this position participates in institutional research and management initiatives, develops cross-cutting research proposals and initiatives, and fosters collaboration across SRNL and with partner universities and external institutions.
Responsibilities- Provide direct line management responsibilities within the Global Security Directorate.
- Promote a culture of scientific excellence, by maintaining a routine physical presence, while performing work in a safe and secure manner to ensure all division work is planned and executed safely and in full compliance with environmental, safety, health, quality, and security requirements.
- Proactively promote principles of stewardship, and accessibility and ensure the division has the capabilities, tools, talent, and partnerships needed to execute its missions effectively and on time.
- Manage the division's budget, financial performance, facilities, and capital and infrastructure needs, leading the formulation of long-term, mission-critical plans to sustain and grow division capabilities. Ensure delivery of high-quality products on scope, on schedule, and within budget.
- Contribute as a key member of the GSD Senior Leadership Team to the formulation and execution of GSD's strategic priorities, initiatives and programmatic growth.
- Oversee the recruitment and retention of talent, ensuring a diverse applicant pool and employee workforce.
- Develop and execute strategic workforce and succession plans that align directly with the Lab Agenda, core competencies, and overall division goals
- Promote science education and work to build a pipeline of next generation researchers through outreach and education programs with other national laboratories and learning institutions.
- Advance SRNL's standing and visibility in the division's technical domains through appropriate publications, presentations, professional leadership, and strategic external relationships.
- Foster employee development through mentoring, performance management, and succession planning.
- Act as primary Division contact, representing the Division on Lab-Level committees, task forces, and working groups with a shared responsibility for the overall lab-wide science and technology strategy.
- Integrate and implement commercialization activities through the Laboratory's business plan and strategies.
- Develop communications strategies across the directorate on multi-disciplinary programs and initiatives.
- Effectively communicate relevant information to key internal and external stakeholders.
- Lead community engagement activities to support regional and national stakeholders.
- Other duties as assigned by the Associate Laboratory Director
QualificationsMinimum Qualifications- B.S. in an engineering or physical science discipline. 10+ years of relevant experience, including 5 years in technical leadership roles.
- Significant progressive experience in research and research leadership, including direct management of technical staff with demonstrated success building/leading multidisciplinary research teams, and developing research leaders.
- Technical expertise in at least one of the division's core domains (Cyber Assurance, Energy Resilience, Radio Frequency (RF) Engineering, Technical Intelligence Analysis, or Atmospheric Technologies), with the capability to steward other domains.
- Demonstrated commitment to safety in medium to high-hazard environments.
- Demonstrated experience in fiscal management, including authorizing expenditures, managing overhead budgets, and setting operational performance metrics for scientific or engineering groups.
- Strong record of recruiting, developing, and retaining technical talent and cultivating the next generation of research leaders.
- Proven ability to work effectively in matrix environments, partnering with peer leaders and senior sponsors to align direction and execute missions.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to represent an organization credibly to senior sponsors, DOE leadership, external partners, and internal staff.
- U.S. citizenship and ability to obtain/maintain a DOE "Q" and TS/SCI clearances. For ability to obtain DOE "Q" and TS/SCI security clearances, US Citizenship is Legally Required.
Preferred Qualifications- Advanced degree in engineering or physical science.
- Experience in a DOE national laboratory, federal research environment, or similar mission-driven research organization.
- Familiarity with Department of Defense/Department of War, Department of Homeland Security, Department of Justice and intelligence programs.
- Proven ability to build strategic partnerships with industry, academia, other national laboratories and other governmental agencies.
- Proven track record of expanding research portfolios, securing external funding and leading multi-stakeholder collaborations
- Experience transitioning research to operational environments.
- Broad knowledge of national security, cyber assurance, energy Resilience, analytic methods and techniques used by IC organizations, and environmental modeling.
- Experience working with USIC sponsors (e.g., FBI, CIA, DoD/DoW) or equivalent interagency environments and national research communities.
- Commitment to mentoring early-career professionals and fostering inclusive research environments.
